Inconsiderate parking plans announced
31 July 2008
Plans intended to deal with inconsiderate parking have been outlined in a consultation today by transport minister Rosie Winterton.
A parking framework introduced by the Department for Transport earlier this year gave councils in England the authority to issue penalty charge notices to drivers who double park or park on dropped footways designed to help wheelchair users get around more safely.
In news that may be of interest to car insurance customers and other road users, the new consultation will focus on allowing councils to enforce against these offences without having to indicate the restrictions with markings or signs.
Keith Banbury, chief executive of the British Parking Association (BPA), welcomed the consultation.
He said: "The BPA welcomes the government's decision to consult on proposals to clarify the law regarding the enforcement of double parking and the obstruction of footway crossovers where this is undertaken by local authorities as part of civil parking enforcement."
The BPA states it is the largest professional association in Europe which represents organisation in the traffic management industry.
