Schools around the country are using pedal power to compete in a virtual cycling race across Africa.
Pupils, teachers and parents from around 80 academic institutions are taking part in a 7,500-mile simulated journey from Cairo to Cape Town as part of the first-ever Bike It national race, sustainable charity Sustrans explains.
Andy Casson, Bike It office for London, says that the race will help younger people to get into the habit of travelling to school on a regular basis as well as demonstrating to parents the large amount of distance that can be covered on two wheels.
"Even a few miles of pedal power each day soon adds up and can make a significant contribution to people's health and the environment," he adds.
The national prize is £2,000 to be spent on cycling equipment for the winning school and regional awards will also be made available.
Results will be announced in the week beginning June 2nd.
In related news, Sustrans released its annual Bike It project review in recent days, noting that participating schools saw levels of cycling treble within a year.
