Smaller cars 'prove popular'

20 May 2008

Motorists are increasingly purchasing smaller cars as they look for ways to tackle rising fuel costs, according to Motorpoint.

Research by the vehicle retailer indicates that sales of smaller cars - such as the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa, Renault Clio and Fiat Grande Punto - increased sharply during the first three months of 2008.

Meanwhile, sales of larger 4 x 4 vehicles showed signs of slowing down, in news that may be of interest to car insurance customers as well as other road users.

David Shelton, managing director of the firm, comments that Motorpoint's figures indicate that the number of people buying cars has not slowed down, despite the effects of the credit crunch.

"What is clear, though, is that people are becoming ever more conscious of fuel consumption and as a result, small cars are proving extremely popular," he adds.

In related news, the Institute of Advanced Motorists recently asserted that there is "no substitute" for professional tuition when it comes to learning to drive.
