The National Trust has launched what is has described as "the biggest ever plant hunt" in the UK.
It explains that it has begun a survey to record details about the wide range of plants growing in National Trust gardens in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Mike Calnan, head of parks and gardens at the organisation, explains that this is the largest and most comprehensive survey of its kind ever to take place in the UK.
"At the moment we have records for around five per cent of plants in National Trust gardens and this survey will take that figure to beyond 75 per cent in the next three years," he adds.
Those with a passion for touring could well be tempted to visit some of the National Trust sites that are to be involved in the survey, including Stourhurst in Wiltshire and Sissinghurst in Kent.
In recent days, the organisation announced that it has been gifted around 26 hectares of land at Welcombe Mouth in Devon.
