Coastal protection encouraged by walking charity

21 November 2008

Caravanners who like to travel to Britain's coastlines may wish to take part in an event happening this weekend.

Held by the Hampshire Ramblers, the occasion marks attempts to make the coast more accessible to the public, while celebrating the progress made so far with the Marine and Coastal Access bill.

Justin Cooke, coastal access campaigner and organiser, states: "Currently, access to much of the coastline of England and Wales is sub-standard or out-of-bounds."

He adds that this "discourages walkers" and causes rural businesses to lose out "on the money that walkers bring".

The event will also take place at 20 different coastal hotspots up until the bill is passed next year, although the Hampshire event is scheduled for tomorrow.

With 139,000 members across Britain, the Ramblers' Association has been promoting walking and the preservation of Britain's footpaths for 70 years.

It is also dedicated to educating people in the pressures which face the country's footpaths and the environment.
