Petrol stations near Portsmouth

In June we are again travelling to France with our caravan on the Portsmouth/ Caen crossing. We normally use the daytime crossing and as we travel from the northeast we stay overnight at a site near Fareham where we usually refuel. This year we are travelling on the overnight ferry and we will need to fill up with fuel prior to the crossing. Has anyone any suggestions on petrol station locations which are easy accessible.

Is that the one under the flyover ... just up the road from the Bird in'th' hand pub (coming from Collingwood)?

That's the one, are you still stuck there? Should ease in another hour.

Many many moons ago SWMBO had an 'incident' in the car there 🙄

We lived in Rowner at the time 😉

If you want to fill up as close to the ferry as possible there is a Shell garage just south of the roundabout that takes you to the ferry.

So, assuming you enter Portsmouth from the north on the motorway, you follow the signs from the M275 at junction 2 to the ferries, but instead of turning right for the ferry at the first roundabout after the motorway you carry straight on and then do a U turn at the next roundabout just over half a mile further on. You then make your way back north on the A3 towards the ferries and the Shell station is on your left.

It is not more than a mile out of your way in total. Last Friday it was £1.289 for petrol so a bit more expensive than the supermarkets but not out of the woods and worth it in my veiw as it is so convenient for the ferry.

I always fill up with caravan en tow at Tesco store at Paulsgrove/Portchester on the A27..just a few minutes from the motorway.

Plenty of wide space as long as you don't accidentally drive into the Macdonalds instead, which I managed to do last September...

Rocky, But if you are running late and don't have time to refuel at Portsmouth there is an easy access Esso station just after you arrive in France. About one mile towards Caen from the ferryport at Ouistreham there is a roundabout which gives access to Camping Riva Bella to the left, while the Esso station is on the right. There are 24/24 automated pumps taking UK Credit and debit cards, and a straight drive through with a caravan. In case you are late!

Today's Esso gazole  price there at Ouistreham is €1.39 which is  £1.17p.  Do Portsmouth prices match that ?

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my question, there are a few to consider, even the one Near Caen.

When we first started going to France via Portsmouth we tried all sorts of Stations. By far the best for us is the Tesco one at Paulsgrove. With it being a night ferry, it is sometimes possible to stop in the main Tesco car park if you arrive too early. Having to negotiate the M25 with its variable traffic issues, we always build in some contingency time and then need somewhere to stop for a while. Hope you have brilliant weather as we are going at the same time.

Thanks to Mr H and Dr Nigel this location seems to be a good option especially if we arrive a bit early.

They must have put something in the water because I did that last autumn as well. I've not got any real excuse as it is my local supermarket. embarassed
