Didnā€™t know what to expect after reading some reviews

This stay was our last in our first tour of Scotland and having read some of the reviews ahead of arrival we arrived with a little trepidation. Our fears were unfounded, we were welcomed and given lots of information, there were plenty of pitches to choose from, all very well spaced and with lots of lovely shrubs and tress for privacy. The toilet blocks are standard for The club but the showers are so powerful and warm and no timer - wonderful. Although the public transport is excellent and cheap, the convenience of the mini bus service into the city was an added bonus. Yes, there is a little noise from aircraft but living in. Manchester that didnā€™t bother us. Lovely walk down to the promenade which is a great place for families. Would we come again..... absolutely.

A well kept site in an ideal location.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and the facilities were very clean although a little dated shower blocks. A five minute walk across the road and you were on the beach/boardwalk which was great for the dog and/or cycling. The site minibus was very useful into the town and the driver was a real character and very friendly. We will use this site again for our next visit to the fringe festival.

Edinburgh weekends

We first used this site in January this year, as part of our family live in Edinburgh. Weā€™ve now visited twice with a third, so far in the summer. Itā€™s handy for visiting them and events we have in the city, (check out Crammond cars & coaches for transport into the city) It also provides us with a quiet getaway too, with a walk to the promenade and park on the coast nearby. Friendly Wardens, well spaced pitches, clean and tidy facilities and site. What more could we want?

Great location for Edinburgh and relaxing.

Well kept site with friendly staff. We took public transport into Edinburgh just Ā£1.80 each way or Ā£4.50 day saver ticket. Also direct bus to Royal Yacht Brittania and Leith. It's a short walk to catch the bus which are quite regular. As we were late one evening (2100hrs) we caught an UBER from the far side of the town centre for just Ā£15. Lots of cycle paths and lovely promenade just a short stroll away. A little noisy on the pitches next to the road. Great value at around Ā£25 at this time of year.

Site maintenance or lack off it šŸ‘Øā€šŸ’»

I have just left this site and it is great as always but new wardens probably through no fault of theirs are wandering about power washing paths and blowing stones with a leaf blower in the section of the site thatā€™s is currently closed and all the time the grass is screaming out to get cut and weeds are beginning to grow and the hedges are starting to grow ! They obviously need help from someone who has previously done some sort of landscaping šŸ™šŸ™

Nice site for visiting Edinburgh

This campsite is kept clean and tidy and has friendly helpful staff. The children's play area is nice and my daughter loved playing on there with the friends she made on the site. The location isnā€™t great for getting into Edinburgh especially with children as the bus stop is quite a walk away however there is a brilliant minibus that runs from the site every day that gets you into Edinburgh really quickly. I enjoyed our stay and would come back to this site but only because of the minibus service which makes it so easy to get into the city and back each day.

Our ā€˜regularā€™ Edinburgh campsite

We come to Edinburgh regularly and love this site because it is easy to get into the city by bus, close to several cycling routes and has lovely walks along the front. I do take the point that at night Marine Drive is rather dark and lonely but in the daytime itā€™s fine and, if we needed to come back late, itā€™s not too far to get a taxi. The walk/cycle to Cramond and the River Almond Walkway is lovely and on this trip we were able to catch the right tides to go across the causeway to Cramond Island, which was a real treat. And the site itself is fabulous, with excellent facilities, level, spacious pitches and warm and friendly staff. Lockable bike storage is another bonus we appreciated. We have stayed in two other Edinburgh campsites and have enjoyed all three but none of them are perfect and, for us, this is the one we will keep coming back to.

Delighted to give this place a try despite other reviews.

We accidentally booked this site after mistaking it for another. After realising our mistake we read reviews, including the most recent and began to regret our decision. We were concerned about the ā€˜detritusā€™ from nearby areas, concerns about safety from nearby neighbours (out with the site) and also the noise from the flight path directly over-head. However, we arrived and were greeted by exceptional friendly staff, an exceptionally tidy and well-kept site and immaculate, well appointed pitches. The facilities, including toilet block, shower block and fresh & waste water facilities were some of the most clean we have ever visited. On initial entry to the toilet/shower block it is a bit dated looking and reminded me of an early 00ā€™s swimming pool but on every visit to a shower or toilet, morning, noon or night, the place was spotless. We could not fault it and would say it is the cleanest Club Site we have used. The site itself is in a brilliant location for Edinburgh, The Lothians and Fife and was very quiet and friendly. Yes, there is a hotel out with the site around 300m down the road which appears to house many refugees but my wife, my 3 year old son and myself walked past it every day en route to the promenade and encountered no issues and didnā€™t feel unsafe in the slightest. We left the site to get a bus to Edinburgh City centre and it took between 15-25 minutes dependent on the traffic. Nearby, there is an abundance of shops and retail parks within a 10 minute drive to meet all your needs. I was also concerned about the noise from the flight path as previously mentioned by other site users however, found this to be unobtrusive. Indeed, there are aircraft flying over-head at times but the noise from them lasts a maximum of 20 seconds and flights are not passing so frequently that it is a constant nuisance. In a nutshell, we were very anxious about coming to this site but are so glad we didnā€™t cancel our booking. We have had a wonderful stay, in-fact as I write this, I am sitting in our caravan on the site with 2 nights still to go and we are already planning our next visit. Please do not let the negative reviews put you off visiting here as, from our experience, many of the issues are not as terrible as they appear to be. If you want to enjoy a friendly, quiet holiday, close to a major city with all its attractions, close to a fantastic beach with views across to Fife, the Forth Bridges and a site which is immaculate, then visit this one!!! The surroundings are not as ā€˜unappealingā€™ as some may suggest.

A good site in unappealing surroundings

There’s no avoiding that the area near and around the Edinburgh CMC site is unappealing and littered with the detritus of communities who either cannot be bothered, or who do not have the mind-set, to dispose of their waste in a responsible fashion.

The imposing building opposite the site is a refuge for placeless people. The neglected, dilapidated Almond House Lodge, just a short distance west, overlooking the estuary, which I imagine must once have been an expensive hotel, is now a home for those from overseas who seek a better life. Both are owned by the same wealthy person, though whether through altruism or the desire for profit is unclear. I see no case for vilifying either group of peoples occupying these places, but there is no escaping the certain fact that the impact it has on the area is far from positive.

I neither saw nor heard any evidence of a direct bearing on the site, as some have hinted - the inevitable question being whether desperate people might take desperate measures. I felt perfectly safe and relaxed here, despite the stereotypes, and I am sure you will too.

I met a volunteer collector of waste outside the site. A young man, proud of his community, who had filled his Ford Transit Custom to the gunnels with, inter alia, two fridges, a microwave, wooden pallets and dozens of black bags mostly containing beer cans. By the side of the road another pile of black bags and various other discarded, and unlikely, items awaited collection later. Great that he does this, but tragic that he has to, and symptomatic of the general sense of decline. Indeed, Edinburgh struck me as in decay generally; vanity projects like more trams, but roads in the most awful dilapidated condition. Be prepared for a rough ride!

The site itself was pleasant enough, and nicely laid out in my view. I used the toilet block only once, relying on my own facilities, but I found this to be perfectly fine. The cycle lockers were useful.

Lothian buses to the City can be reached in less than half a mile by using the path running outside the eastern boundary of the site. There are lovely walks along the front, especially westwards to Cramond and then along the River Almond.

The planes heading into Edinburgh airport were not even remotely an issue for me; but just as my stay at a site can be spoiled by noisy neighbours, engaging in al-fresco get-togethers, so I understand that others may have their stay tainted by distant jet-engines.

The site is almost on the bank of the Firth of Forth, but shielded from it by woodland. I could not help thinking that the site could have the most tremendous outlook, be lifted out of its grubby surroundings, and take on a whole new aura, were it not for the trees. It would also reduce the scope for those who find woodland a convenient place to leave their garbage and behave anti-socially. But it is what it is and destroying trees for such a purpose is not very acceptable – even if it were within our gift.

A Good Site For A City Break

I would have rated this site excellent were it not for a couple of things which are essentially beyond the C&MCs control. Firstly, the site is situated very close to the flightpath into Edinburgh Airport's south westerly runway, so if you're a light sleeper, it could be a bit of a problem at night. Secondly, the site is about half a mile down a lightly used, unlit road, which we did walk down at night but we weren't comfortable. The pavement is good but if you're of a nervous disposition, I suggest you forego the buses and either use taxis or take advantage of Graham's excellent minibus service which runs from outside the reception directly to the city centre in about 15 minutes. Return fare was Ā£6 each and worth every penny, thank you Graham. We were extremely happy with everything else about the site. The wardens were very friendly and they kept the site clean and tidy. The toilet blocks were a bit dated but were clean and perfectly usable, with downtime for cleaning kept down to a creditable 90 minutes as well. One comment I would make is that there are no pubs or restaurants close to the site, the nearest being a Toby Carvery (adequate at best IHMO) about 30 minutes walk away, part of which is down the aforementioned lane. The last minibus to the site from the city centre is around 6.30pm, so if you want to stay in the city until later and you're anything like nervous, then it's a taxi I'm afraid. All in all though, it's a thoroughly good site, which I'd be happy to go back to and I recommend it to you.
