Friendly Staff, Shabby and Overcrowded Facilities in School Holidays

We visited for 2 nights towards the end of the recent school holidays.  As usual with the CC the site staff were excellent with a good welcome. All pitches were grass but with well drained and well cut grass that was no problem.  Sadly the facilities felt stretched to cope with the numbers on site.  I have done several reviews before and never had to be critical but here goes. There were queues for washing up and the toilets/showers were heavily used with the odd queue forming at times.  The mens toilets smelled badly of stale urine, enough to put me off showering there. Every time I went in I opened all the windows, it was pretty pongy.  There was obviously a water leak in the mens WCs as there was a lot of (hopefully only) water lying about every time I used them.  So not up to the usual CC standard I am afraid and I wasn't the only one saying it.  I had two conversations with others and without prompting from me they agreed with my view.  Time for a good makeover and expansion of facilities I think.

Tewkesbury Stop-over

Had another stopover on Site at the end of April. Very handy from M5 and easy access. Usual high Club standards. Since it is in town, not as peaceful as some sites, given proximity to traffic, adjacent public car park and Abbey bells! However, given its convenient location, we will use again.

Another great stay at Tewkesbury abbey

We enjoyed our 5 night stay, the wardens are welcoming and helpful. Good shops within walking distance, lots of pubs and cafe's, nice walks along the river. The Abbey is well worth a visit, we will be back.

Lovely town and site

We had a wonderful few days on this site in beautiful weather and will return. The lack of hard standing for us is an issue with a 7m motorhome but the fact that this is sited right in the town of Tewkesbury and so close to the beautiful abbey is priceless for us. There are some lovely restaurants and pubs here and some interesting shops and the Abbey itself has been so pivotal to historic events makes this a hit with me. Great site.

Noisy nights

just had 4 noisy nights here, plenty of noise from cars coming& going from car park adjacent to pitching area near entrance& also gangs of teenagers gathering in same car park until late at night accompanied by shouting and swearing .Also Abbey bells were intrusive for 2 consecutive nights which ruined an otherwise enjoyable stay at site. Will have 2nd thoughts about rebooking here again!!Fields 3&5 n/a to us so omitted. Also some pitches opposite us appeared to be very close to neighbours, backing onto each other within 10 ft .

No early arrivals.

Good to see the wardens keeping to the NO ARRIVALS before 12 0'clock rule.

Good site

Both my wife and I enjoyed our stay at this site.  It is within easy walking distance of a very interesting town, some great pubs and real ales on offer.  I didn't experience the trouble some have but I was on an inner pitch.  The ground is very wet even after our warm spell, between two rivers I suppose must raise the water table.  Other points to watch when pitching are, the ground is not level on all pitches and some are quite short in length and will not take a twin axle or large motorhome.  I will visit this site again I rather like the town.  I would rather not rate the family aspects of the site as mine have gone.

Pleasant but........

Now that the new season is here can we just warn anyone intending to stay here to be extra vigilant and careful where they site their van.We were here at the end of August last year and parked in an area where there are no trees just fencing. We were having our evening meal when we were suddenly pelted by stones thrown by local yobs(yes even Gloucester has them!). The damage to our caravan ran into hundreds of pounds and we even our car was hit.How we weren't injured is a miracle. Wardens simply said it had happened before and we could claim on our insurance.Apparently the area in question was cordoned off but don't know if it still is.We were told that a lady had previously been injured by a flying stone. If you must stay here then just be careful-it has cost us a lot of money and could have been avoided if steps had been taken earlier to prevent this happening. We were sitting targets.

Comment from The Club:

As you have quite rightly stated, we had unfortunately suffered a small number of incidents of stone throwing by local children during your stay. As all incidents were within a very small window and had been reported at the time to the local Police, it was trusted that this was an isolated occurrence and there was no reason at the time to believe this would continue.

Once it had become evident that this was not an isolated occurrence, an immediate decision was taken by The Caravan Club to remove the usage of a number of pitches that were at risk of further attack and as such we regrettably had to cancel a number of bookings as our reduced capacity could not accommodate our bookings however I am sure you will agree this was the most sensible option and demonstrates a care of duty to our members.

Please be assured that through working closely with the Head Teacher of the local School and assisting the Police in their investigations by providing CCTV footage as well as digital images the wardens had managed to capture on their camera phones, these matters were promptly dealt with within the community and no further occurrences have since taken place. We do not consider there to be any further risk at this site but we are very sorry that you were affected by this during your stay.

2nd Stay

This was our second visit to this site. It is good but several points let it down. Firstly the area is prone to flooding and it has no hard standing pitches so when the weather is wet as it was just prior to us going I did receive a call from the site warning us that the ground is very soft for motorhomes. I cannot understand why they do not have hard standing pitches and they do not have the equipment to pull motorhomes off pitches if they get stuck. Secondly the hot water especially at the pot wash is non-existant and takes an age to wash up. It has a lovely location right next to the abbey and the staff are always helpful and friendly.
