We said we'd be back!!

We have not long been back from a great holiday at The Firs - to have the holiday we should have had last September when we spent 12 days going to and from Royal Derby Hospital for my husband to be treated for a nasty insect bite! It was lovely to meet up again with site managers Annemarie and her husband Perry who were so helpful and kind to us last year and catch up! They have got to be the nicest and friendliest managers ever!! The site looked beautiful and immaculate, with flowers, well cut grass and a spotless shower block. A great deal of care is taken with touches around the site that make it well worth the stay. My personal favourite is the little bird table with the caravan! There are tables where you can sit and relax and look out over the Derwent Valley - just stunning. The weather wasn't great in the first week but we got out and about visiting and revisiting some of our favourite places - Chatsworth, Buxton and Bakewell. The Heage windmill is a must and a fascinating tour. We also rode the cable car from Matlock Bath up to the Heights of Abraham - with stunning views. It really is one of our favourite sites and hope to be back again one of these days.

A lovely couple of days

We have just returned from a couple of days at this site. The pitch was fairly level and overlooking trees which gave a feeling of privacy. There were wonderful views from the site and it was nice to see all the bird feeders dotted about. We spent time watching the visitors to the one near our pitch. The toilet/shower facilities were always spotlessly clean and the wardens were always busy keeping everything neat and tidy for visitors. We walked into Belper which is a lovely little town and also walked to Heage windmill having Sunday lunch at The Spanker on the way back. I’m sure we will return in the future.

Beautiful, peaceful site

We have recently returned from 5 nights at this site and definitely hope to return in the near future. We were greeted by the relief wardens who were friendly and helpful, lots of useful information about the pitches and we were able to choose where we wanted to be. The site itself was perfect, extremely well kept, stunning views and immaculate facilities. We truly could not fault anything. Most of the pitches are hard standing and all level. There is large building central to most pitches with toilets, wash cubicles, showers, laundry room, washing up room and even an area for dogs to be showered down! When the toilet block is being cleaned a short stroll away you will find the information room and a toilet if needed while the main block is closed. The information room is also something to behold, so much information about places to visit, places to walk and places to eat etc. maps and leaflets and lots of other interesting things to see and read. We did go out to eat at two of the suggested pubs, The Spanker and The Black boy, we had excellent meals in both places, plenty of choice and good value for money, we went end May so would suggest you might need to book as I can see both places getting busy in the summer, they both have outside areas and welcome dogs. There are plenty of walks, things to see and places to go. We would definitely recommend this site for the welcoming wardens and the ambiance if you want a relaxing break away, you don’t need to go far to take in the breathtaking views because they are right there. There are a couple of picnic tables tucked away where you can sit and drink you wine and drink in the views! Can’t wait to go back 😊

Superman!

My wife and I recently stayed at The Firs in our motor home. To spare my blushes let's just say that I managed to get myself in quite a pickle whilst reversing onto the pitch. I realised I needed some help! So I went to the office to confess my sins. Marie, the warden. was brilliant. She told me not to worry and reassured me that they would sort everything out and did no more than summon her husband (fellow warden) Perry. Within minutes Perry had assessed the situation and arranged for another member, with a big 4 wheel drive BMW, to give me a tow out of my predicament. The following day I witnessed Perry in action again when a caravaner on the next pitch has electrical problems. I was impressed. Marie was very knowledgeable on local walks and other information. She always had a smile. They are both a credit to the club. I highly recommend this site.

First of many stays

We stayed here for the first time at Easter ,what a fantastic site clean and tidy a credit to the wardens based there we enjoyed it so much we returned three weeks later for a weekend and again it did not disappoint there are excellent walks , we did the circular walk in reverse and stopped at The Spanker for lunch on the way back. It has become a favourite choice of site for us needless to say we shall return. The wardens are friendly and always there to help and knowledgeable about the area we cannot fault them or the site

Little gem

What a little gem of a site and only 30 minutes away from home but felt like a different county. We arrived on site to be greeted by the warden who explained the site to us as I went in to book in. Both wardens were very helpful and had a chat and a joke which was brilliant, great start to the weekend. The site was absolutely beautiful and clean and the views are amazing. Perry and Anne-Marie are the best wardens we have ever met on a club site!!

A great place and lovely Wardens

Was our first visit to The Firs, what a gem of a site. Well managed, extremley tidy, clean facilities, and helpful and happy wardens. The Lady warden recommended good walks, pubs and and transportation links during our stay, it was so refreshing to have someone who really went out their way to be sure you had enjoyable stay. This is one site we will return too

Great Easter Break

This was our 2nd visit to this site for 4 nights arriving on Easter Monday, the site was quieter than we expected. The Wardens were lovely, especially Marie who spent ages telling us the best ways to get places, she had done her research and her hand drawn maps were very useful. We have a motorhome which we leave onsite and walk, cycle or use public transport. We walked to The Spanker Pub on our first day, which was very nice, the food looked great although we didn’t eat there. We played pool and the Staff were very nice. We cycled along Crich Lane down into Belper but came back along main road and up Broadholme Lane - we do have electric but it was still heavy going. We did the Ambergate walk which takes you through woods, fields and along the Cromford Canal. The details for this walk are available at the site. We decided to cycle to Cromford Mills and went down Broadholme Lane and along the road, it is paved for those who want to be away from the busy road up and past the HURT Pub to join the CRomford Canal, which is then a lovely 5 mile ride to the Mills. It added on a further 4 miles but we felt it was better than tackling the steep hill. We will be booking to go back to explore more the area has to offer.

Fab Easter weekend

What a lovely site. Stunning views and great location with super clean facilities. Perry and Marie were great and keep the site looking lovely. We are a couple in our fifties so found the site good for us not too big but think for families with small children would be a bit quiet. That said lots to do and see in the area and to explore. Would highly recommend the Blackboy pub for food and drink. We will certainly be returning to this one.

Nice getaway, ideal if you are active

We decided to take a punt and visit this site as we usually head to Hope Valley area, so glad we did The staff here were excellent and their advise on the local are was spot on, we ate at the Spanker Inn on our last night, which was excellent, We walked to Belper on the Wardens route but came back via the Derwent Valley Way to Ambleford then back to the site on a loop walk, excellent day out. Next day we cycled to Ridgeway then picked up the Cromford Canal and rode to Cromford Mill along the tow path, then cycled back ( caveat being that for the hill back up you need to be a regular cyclist or have an e-bike...but I'm 62 and managed it fine on my gravel bike) Views over the Derwent Valley are fantastic and the shops in Belper are decent too...... we cycled down and back to shop easily. We'll be back but maybe not until 2023 due to other planned trips for 2022
