Blast from the caravan rallying past

Ever wondered what caravan rallies were like in times gone by?
Well a new online exhibition is sure to provide the answers, thanks
to a partnership between The Caravan Club and the National Motor
Museum Trust.
Launched earlier this year, the site documents an exciting range
of caravanning memorabilia, as well as accounts of British Caravan
Road Rally competitions throughout the years. The museum has been
closely guarding The Club's Collection for the past four years and
now it is just a few clicks away.
Angela Cox, who is The Caravan Club Collection Officer at the
National Motor Museum, noted that there is far more to the
exhibition that people may think. "In addition to gathering items,
we have also been interviewing a cross-section of people who
competed or marshalled at the events. This exhibition features many
personal memories which are now preserved for the future," she
explained.
Between 1954 and 1977, The Club staged British Caravan Road
Rally competitions, which showed off the best cars and caravans
around at the time, as well as the skill of their drivers. Big name
rally drivers such as Pat Moss-Carlsson and Tony Pond were among
those to have appeared at the contests. Printed items, photographs
and film footage from the events are just some of the items for
caravan enthusiasts - and indeed anyone with an interest in history
- to marvel at online.
There is also the opportunity for those who attended the rallies
to share their own memories and photographs.
So, just one question remains - where can the exhibition be
found? Head to www.nationalmotormuseum.org.uk/online_exhibitions
to uncover the best of British caravanning history: you won't be
disappointed!
