Councils called on to clean up streets

Published: 27 August 2010

More effort needs to be made to make the country's roads better for caravanners and other motorists, the government has emphasised.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles and transport secretary Philip Hammond revealed that some roads have surplus road signs and other "street clutter" that confuses motorists.

"We have written to councils to remind them that it need not be this way - we don't need all this clutter confusing motorists, obstructing pedestrians and hindering those with disabilities," commented Mr Hammond.

Although some signs are needed by law, some are put in place by councils who wrongly believe they are required to do so, the government stated.

In recent days, the Department for Transport urged people to take out the necessary protection to cover them if their tour operator goes out of business.

It emphasised that this will help avoid anxiety among travellers when they head off on holiday.
