A14 congestion alerts may ensure great days out

As work begins on the A14 to install new electronic signs alerting motorists to the road conditions up ahead, drivers may expect more great days out to go unspoilt due to traffic jams.
The Highways Agency is installing fibre optic cables alongside the road, which lead to digital signs that can be updated remotely.
By changing the messages on the signs, the organisation can let drivers know quickly if the road ahead becomes congested.
Alternative routes and the likely impact of heavy traffic on journey times can also be displayed on the signs, letting motorists decide the best way to reach their destination and making sure more great days out begin on time.
Work is scheduled to last from March 15th to 19th while the optical fibres that carry the information to the signs are put in place.
For motorists towing a caravan, the greater chance of keeping close to motorway speeds could be welcome news.
At slower speeds, a headwind can cause the effective weight of the caravan's nose to drop, resulting in instability.
