Why stay here ...

A touring-only site situated on the banks of the River Cher, Le Moulin Fort is a relaxing place to stay with an emphasis on wellbeing. It’s suited to couples and families with older children looking for a peaceful stay, and many visitors return time and again due to its excellent location, friendly atmosphere and hard-working staff.

The level pitches are of a good size and shaded by trees and shrubs, while facilities are well kept and include a bar and restaurant, pool and mini-golf. Twin-axle caravans and large motorhomes will find access to the pitches straightforward.

The site is a short walk from the Château de Chenonceau, once owned by Catherine de Medici and famous for its fairy tale design. The area is excellent for walking, cycling and kayaking, and you can also take a hot air balloon trip from Amboise or a boat trip from opposite the site and float under the Chenonceau arches.

Probably a good location, below average facilities

Le Moulin Fort
We only stayed 1 night and it rained pretty much all the time. The location appears good for visiting the Loire valley, but perhaps not a lot to come ‘home’ to. Toilet blocks and showers grubby and slippery and not a lot of care seems to be given which means us campers probably don’t clean our bit either so it leads to a general grubby feel. Motorhome service point and chemical toilet could do with being a bit further away from some pitches as the traffic tends to build up and a few odd smells we can all do without. Having said that pitches are flat and location a real positive, just recognise a bit of compromise needed when it comes to showering etc.

Delightful site

Le Moulin Fort
Lovely site in a great location. The pitches are spacious, albeit oddly-shaped in places. The staff are friendly and helpful. Fresh bread can be ordered daily. The on-site restaurant is excellent, although booking is a must as it is also popular with locals and can get really busy. Perfect base for exploring the Cher and Loire valleys. Amboise is a particular gem of a destination. The only slight downside is the toilet blocks which are a bit rudimentary. Toilet paper has to be collected from a dispenser on the way in and there is no soap for hand washing. There is, however, plenty of hot water.

Good location, facilities a bit tired

Le Moulin Fort
We arrived on the Friday of the Whitsun BH weekend, but rang before to check there were pitches available, which we were assured there were. On arrival check-in was a little slow; we had the impression the young lady checking us in was fairly new to the job and being trained up. The previous English owners have left, and it seems so have some of the English customers who we have seen on the site on our 2 previous visits. The site certainly was never full over the BH weekend, nor at any time during our 5 night stay. We were told to choose a pitch and come back to reception. Plenty to pick from, there are no chalets at all on the site, there are only touring pitches. There are 2 toilet blocks, which appear a bit tired now. Only used the main block, which was clean. Showers were quite hot, as was the water for washing up. Toilet paper is on a huge dispenser at the entrance to the block, not in each cubicle. There is a hairdryer in the ladies'. Pitches varied a bit in size, most have some shade, the pitches directly by the river Cher appeared rather on the small side; there are quite a few people who use the site as an overnight stop. Bread etc can be ordered at reception for the following day. There is a pool, which was a bit chilly when we were there, but very welcome as we had some hot weather. There is also a restaurant, which is open to people from outside the site, but we didn't try it this time; it has a good reputation. On our first night there was some sort of disco from across the river, presumably from the campsite which is more or less opposite this one. This site itself has musical entertainment on Saturdays, finishing at 10pm. There are good cycle routes directly from the campsite along the river Cher. There are some waymarked routes as well. We cycled a long way in each direction, and also to Amboise, by following part of a waymarked route and a different route back. And of course there is Chenonceaux very close to the site; we didn't visit as we've visited before, but the view of it from the riverpath is lovely. We enjoyed our stay here very much, had intended to stay just 3 nights but extended it to 5. The site was quiet during our stay, apart from the first 2 evenings as mentioned above, there was no evening entertainment at all and no noise. The site accepts the ACSI discount card during the off-peak season.

New Owners and a Different vibe

Le Moulin Fort
We have stayed here many times over the years and used it as both a stopover and a longer stay site as the site is very relaxing and in a convenient location. I was surprised to see a sign saying that the site was full at the entrance, this was not strictly true but it was pretty full, something I had not seen before. This was our first visit since John and Sarah sold to the new French owners and were looking forward to seeing what changes had been made. To be honest nothing much has changed except for the introduction of a first class restaurant . On arrival we were advised to book for the Restaurant which we did as it was an easy option. The food was great and fairly priced. The Restaurant was full, even locals attended which meant some campers were turned away. The site used to be predominately British with around 85% and around 10% Dutch with a smattering of other Nationalities. It was very noticeable that there were less Brits and lots of French on the site as well as other nationalities , which was nice to see. Whilst the staff in Reception spoke good English the male bar staff did not and made no real effort to do so and were even sullen, this frustrated a Spaniard and Dutchman so it is not just a Brit thing. For an International site I would have expected basic English. Although it was not a great issue as everyone managed to get by in Pidgeon French. A smile goes a long way and sadly was not to be found on the faces of the male staff in the Bar, just felt they could have been more welcoming. There has not been any obvious investment made on the site and it is desperately needs updating, particularly the toilet blocks and electricity supply. Having said that everything is clean and functional, however, whilst I had a hot shower every time my wife endured a cold shower every time! The pool was cloudy for the first couple of days but was rectified afterwards. The site is conveniently situated for Chenonceaux Chateau and the towns of Amboise with its fabulous Sunday morning market and Loches with its Wednesday market. The Zoo at Beauval is well worth a visit and is without doubt the best one I have visited.

Perfect location by the river Cher for exploring Chenonceaux

Le Moulin Fort
Great site for exploring the Loire. Don’t forget your bikes! Handy to get to Chenonceaux castle. As we’d visited before this time we hired a boat from the other side of the river from the campsite. Pool great - if a bit fresh!! We ate at restaurant on site - very popular and food good though mussels dissapointingly small. Staff mostly very helpful but the odd one needs yo work on his customer manners!! Facilities kept very clean. Stayed two nights.
