An area of our lovely country that has been on our list for quite a while. Finally got here but as a “solo traveller” now 😔. I chose this site because of its location and proximity to specific parts of the Peak District I wanted to explore with the dogs - Tissington Trail, Monsal Trail, Castleton, etc. Arrival was very straightforward and I received a lovely, friendly welcome from the wardens. Arriving on the 21st August afforded me a large selection of pitches as the site was pretty quiet (as a previous reviewer had commented). Although it is a big site, it doesn’t feel like it due to the way it has been laid out. Some pitches have quite a slope from front to back, so be aware that levelling blocks might be required. Having read some of the reviews beforehand I was aware of the centralisation of the bins, not that it was an issue or problem for me. I felt the general appearance of the site was really good and very impressed by the look and cleanliness standard of the facilities block. Even more impressed after asking one of the wardens if it has been recently upgraded to be told it was last done in 2019! A testament to the current “team” of wardens and the efforts they are putting in.
It was great to have the country park literally on your doorstep, especially for the dogs as well as providing an interesting and enjoyable walking route into Buxton. The site is well located for the areas I wanted to explore. As a solo traveller having a few more “provisions” in a site shop is always welcomed and it was nice to see some local produce available in the shop here - other Club sites around the country could learn from the Buxton site. Good Friday night pizza with a varied menu and great Saturday fish & chips (with a sensible sized piece of fish too - well done).
Lastly, also echoing the comments of a previous reviewer, my only disappointment with the site was the technology connections. This has no reflection on the wardens as it is out of their control. Appreciating the site is in an old quarry so mobile phone signals will be struggling - I am on O2 and most of the time had no signal at all. This means for communicating with the outside world whilst on site you are reliant on the WiFi system. Periodically it could cope with a simple message via Facebook etc. Anything more complicated it was totally useless. Apart from this being frustrating, for some the need to be in contact with family etc may be vitally important. I don’t know what the answer is but in todays technological world this is woefully inadequate.
However, this was a frustration yes but didn’t spoil my enjoyment of the trip or The Peak District. I shall certainly return as there is lots more areas to explore.
Beautiful Buxton
Lovely site situated in the quarry with great views and walks from the site. We didn't have great weather but managed to do some walks in the country park and climbed Soloman's Temple from which there were great views and walked into Buxton. Also visited NT Lyme Hall which was a good day out. Buxton is a pretty town with lots of amenities and parks. Sampled the fish and chips from the visiting van which were nice. Our son was able to camp here which was great to be able to meet up and pitch nearby. Can't say we noticed that the site was neglected! Our son was on a grass camping pitch and the grass was cut short enough for them to camp. Nothing worse than being away and listening to the lawn mower every day and also it's good for the wildlife too when the grass is that bit longer.

Great managers, poor neighbours.
Arrived at 13.00 too a warm welcome as always, the site manager and his wife are a great team. We setup and had a walk into Buxton you must try the Railway inn Monday to Friday they have some great offers on food Two drinks and pizza £15:00, also checkout the coffee van in the car park just outside the site the coffee is amazing and they have cakes.
Buxton club site is always clean well looked after but there is always somebody or a group of people that will spoil it for you.
We had had the neighbours from hell behind us, Friday night loud until rain stopped play thankgod, but Saturday this group went out with two of the wardens into Buxton for drinks then carried on until almost midnight.
Have some drinks meet up with friends but have some consideration for other campers around you.
The two wardens should know better!!
A Beautiful Part of the Country
We’ve just returned from another fabulous 10 days at this lovely campsite. Unlike previous visits, it was very quiet, possibly due to the generally bad summer weather (we had nice days) and likely due to the cost-of-living crisis hitting family pockets more these days. Whatever, we felt very lucky having the pick of good pitches and no queues for showers etc.
The staff are great, very happy, obliging and always ready to offer advice and assistance, if required. Yes, many of the pitches are showing signs of weeds, but the place does seem to have been a bit neglected over the past year and the staff are working, methodically, to improve each pitch as it is vacated – it’s going to be a long job, especially as the rain and wind, throughout the summer, has not allowed weedkilling sprays to be used effectively.
Having read previous reviews, I was expecting to struggle, as usual, with poor/no WiFi. However, when I arrived the staff informed me that the site had the new, free BT system, which the Club are installing throughout the land. Having struggled and complained about, the previous Air Angel system, seemingly forever, I was overjoyed. However, my happiness was soon dashed as I realised that the very weak signal strength was, generally, very poor indeed and worse that the system it replaced.
Why, in this day and age, the Club is so inept with modern technology as to roll out something this poor, even though it is free, is totally beyond my comprehension.
However, by standing under the WiFi pole, two pitches away from ours, using the system in the middle of the night and relying on free WiFi in the lovely town of nearby Buxton, I was able to get work completed. Not something that I usually need to do on holiday, but unavoidable on this occasion.
So, despite my moan above, do visit this lovely site, with spotless facilities, a good site shop, great wardens and in a spectacular surrounding area, but please, do take some hot, sunny weather with you!
No bins and grass not cut, hardstandings have weeds
Stayed here for three nights last week. Lovely friendly warden on arrival. But this site seems neglected as far as groundwork’s concerned. Saw a warden weeding blockwork outside toilet block using what looked like a domestic knife, think she’ll probably still be at it! No grass cut at all. Bins are located in one place outside of camp barrier? Shame really as a wonderful location, that I’ve used numerous times. Perhaps a good reason for the neglect, but it just looked scruffy. Amenities were spotless tho.
Wheres the bins gone
We have just returned from a 7 night stay and have to say i was very shocked at the state of the pitches lots of grass and weeds. Then they have taken the bins away from the service points. Now in 7 days i think we saw one of the 6 yes 6 wardens twice. I am not one to complain but i would be interested to know what 6 wardens are doing all day as its not emptying the bins cutting the grass or weeding i have noticed since the pandemic wardens doing less and less which makes me wonder what our club fees are going on. We were greeted on our arrival by 3 wardens with clipboards to book one caravan in mmmm.
Sorry to moan but we are paying for this and after visiting independent sites recently the caravan club is definitely slipping.

Another excellent club site
My partner, dog and I stayed for 2 nights last weekend for the first time. We weren't sure what it would be like being in an old quarry but we really loved the location and the easy access to the very nearby country park and other walks. Buxton centre was 35 minutes walk (40 coming back due to the steep slope through the woods) and is very interesting with numerous shops and things to do. The site itself was clean, seemed well looked after and the staff were friendly. As mentioned by others there was no wi-fi but we knew about that before we booked so it was expected and no issue for us.
Excellent Well Maintained Site
Just back after 3 x night stay. Booked a fully serviced pitch which was great. Warm welcome and wealth of local knowledge. Showers very clean and well maintained, Got great tv reception with van aerial but no Wi-Fi was challenging!! Loved sites position in former quarry. Only fault was site obviously on flight path and bit noisy at times, Easy walk down into Buxton (35 mins) / bit longer coming back up hill. Terrible timing for visit to Buxton as entire town filled with noisy funfair - local residents hated it and even closed pubs early as a lot of trouble!! Loved nearby Bakewell and Chatsworth House and fabulous Farm Shop.
Some slippage
This has always been a great site and we have been many times. It is central to the peak district with access to fantastic walking. One special thing we love about the site is that it is open and unregimented with plenty of grassed areas.
Things are changing though!
We noticed many hard standing pitches now have grass and weeds growing on them.
The herb beds are full of weeds and not maintained.
The chemical emptying shoots are not cleaned daily.
From 10th July the waste bins are being removed. If your pitch is at the far end of the site that means a half mile round trip to take your recycling and rubbish to the main gate. This new policy is not in line with the clubs access statement for the site and not heedful of the disability discrimination act.
Pleasant visit, end of June 2023
Site is lovely, plenty of pitch space and we were able to pick our pitch as there were loads spare.
Quick check in and staff are friendly and helpful. Small shop at reception for the 'essentials' but no beans :(
Also, no WIFI on site due to the upgrades that are taking place.
Late night arrivals can pitch up opposite reception for the night (EHU provided) so you can book in early doors.
It rained while we were there and was very windy, but there was just enough calm weather for it to be enjoyable,
Phone signal and 4G (EE and O2) is poor due to the quarry walls, so streaming TV was buffering quite a bit, but we had excellent digital TV signal due to the satellite dish on the roof.
If you are in a motorhome and need to get into Buxton, you can get a taxi for £7 but they only take cash, so we had to phone for another firm who took card and that was £9.80 (£3.50 a mile) each way. You could walk it in about 1 hour but it is up hill and down dale so we didn't bother.
Pizza and fish and chip vans on site, but again only taking cash (The chippy van has a card machine but it looked not to be working)
Make sure you have cash on you when you come here!!!
Facilities were nice and clean and there are plenty of them. Good toilets and showers, lots of waste, water and CDPs
Great site, shame about the weather. if it had been sunny and hot, the local walks would have been brilliant.
We will visit again in the future for a short break, if we are in the area on our travels. (We came to visit family who were staying in Buxton, but they had to cancel due to Covid, so we carried on regardless - Shame we could not get together!)
