Chatsworth House Club site. Always full ????

This story happened on: 24/01/2012

Last November we were invited to Derbyshire with some friends.  Our friends suggested staying at Chatsworth House Caravan Club Site.

“We won’t get on there, they are always full,” I thought, having been told this so many times.

We telephoned the site and to my surprise and delight we were able to get in without any problem.

On arrival at the site we found it busy but by no means full. My message is, don’t listen to hearsay give the wardens a ring.

Whilst on the site, we were made most welcome by the friendly wardens.

The site is very quiet at night with just the odd owl hoot. By day we were amazed to see such a wide variety of wild birds.

The site has the use of a gate that takes you directly into the main estate. Just a few minutes’ walk gets you to the house.

We were there for “Chatsworth at Christmas” each room was decked with the most wonderful decorations depicting various Christmas Carols. It was well worth the entry price.

Whilst on the subject of the entry price, In order to get appropriate discount on the House we made the mistake of booking our visit to the house online before we left home , however we later discovered that by showing our Club receipt at the pay station we could have obtained an even bigger discount. So it is worth remembering to check first

So all in all a wonderful site to visit and don’t forget they are not always full!!

It's a few years since we stayed at Chatsworth but thoroughly enjoyed our 2 stays - both in the winter.  One of our stays was to see the house decorated for Christmas which is well worth going for. Don't forget to visit Chatsworth farm shop while you are there.

Hi just thought I'd write this to agree with you, that like you we didn't think that we could get on the Chatsworth site but managed to get a full week in September. Although the weather was atrocious it was lovely to get back to the area . It is a lovely site and excellent for the " fourlegs" our German shepherd who can thoroughly recommend it. We found the wardens very friendly and helpful too.

We managed to get in for just the two nights in November, the Wednesday and Thursday nights.   We didn't find it the friendliest of sites, but loved the surrounding places, Baslow has some pretty little gift shops (for Mrs Jingles) and  Bakewell town is really lovely and we would go back.    On the Friday morning when we were getting ready to leave, Mrs Jingles ran across to the site Reception to check if we could stay another night and the warden said, "No we are full".

There were quite a few spaces on the site at this point, but other visitors could have been booked in for these.    We tried another commercial site in Bakewell and a CL, but they were  also full for the weekend.  We were amazed at this given it was the middle of November.  So we set off heading for Grassington (Wharfedale) where we knew we could get into,  as we were now heading north and on our way home.    However, about an hour after we left Chatsworth, we checked the bookings online and found that spaces had now become available!!

So, we wondered how spaces were now available if you are required to cancel at least 72 hours in advance?   Presumably there can be emergency cancellations, or people who just don't show.     But, yes, we also find the whole "weekends fully booked up" syndrome to be a real pain.Frown

Just had to cancel my booking a Chatsworth for next weekend so there is at least 1 pitch now available for that weekend!

Dont understand the problem. We were there last weekend. At least 40 empty pitches every day. Good weather, good walking, Chip van on Friday, what more could you ask for?

We have stayed at this site twice and loved it both times.  We shall go again, so thanks for the advice on showing our Caravan Club receipt as we didn't know about this.

Chatsworth mostly showing as fully booked when it's actually not. Goodness knows how much money c.c. lose through cancellations. There ought to be a text, stand-by service put in place. We have been several times and the house and gardens are well worth a visit, particularly at Christmas. However, we believe the site is way over rated and looking very tired now indeed.

The first time we went to Chatsworth it was pure luck, as I was looking for a weekend away in our area and Chatsworth came up, we booked straight away, although I might add my friend tried booking straight after and couldn't get in, and we had a lovely weekend so we wanted to book again for the horse trails weekend which we managed last year having booked on booking day in December, but unfortunately the horse trails were cancelled due to the weather, we still went and had another good weekend.  So we have booked again for    horse trails weekend this year but I had to book at 9am on booking day and since I have looked I can see weekends are all booked in may and June the reason is its such a popular site but why not try some of the others in the Derbyshire area we love Carsington water [Blackwell plantation] and we never have any problem getting on there.
