among the owls

First time here. Very helpful admin, when we were booking. We visited in February when a complete week of rain was forecast. The site was peaceful despite visitors to the wood. The pitches were great even with all the rain, not water logged, especially as we have two dogs that love the mud. I would love to come back when the trees and the planting are in bloom, especially on a sunny day, the site will be beautiful. Every evening the owls kept us company, and we were woken by the chatting of the small birds. We were visited by ducks, pheasants and geese. Ashbourne has a Sainsburys for those forgotten items and Birds bakery does a great cream cake. If you are a walker, take a visit along the Wolfscope trail, well worth a look. The village of Hartington has a great tea/farm shop- the one near the toilets, and these a pub for those that like a tipple. My only negative comment is, that we were in a 8m motorhome, and that there was little road to turn around on, to get out. Despite having an empty bay next door, I hadn't got enough swing to avoid the grass entirely. I probably would have been better reversing all the way back to the car park and turning around there. On a dry day, this wouldn't have been an issue as, the rain had caused the grass to become water logged, and I didn't want to damage the grass, or get stuck. We had a lovely time, despite bad weather. Thank you Heritage wood. We would definitely recommend you, for those wanting a little peace and tranquility.

My last visit here was 33 years ago!

The last time I stopped at Heritage Wood was 33 years ago, shortly after they first opened! Boy oh boy have those sapling trees of 33 years ago grown into magnificent trees and as for the number of dedicated trees, there are now something like 7,000 of them with many of them having beautiful and very touching tributes on plaques next to them. This isn't a morbid place, but an enlightening location where you can easily get lost in your deeper soul searching inner thoughts. Unfortunately the site itself is a little bit tired most especially the foul water disposal point, however with each pitch having water and an immediately adjacent EHU we were more than happy with our lot.

Very peaceful, very dark

This is a small site, with the 5 pitches in a line. A couple feel a bit close together. However, each pitch is separated by trees. Each has its own water tap which is great. No recycling facilities, which felt a bit strange. The site was easy to find. The site is surrounded by the memorial forest and is surprisingly sheltered - we were there during recent gales. Only one pitch is really a hard standing and the grass pitches get very soft. We initially parked our motorhome with the front wheels on the gravel area along the front of the pitches, but later, as the rain continued, parked parallel to our pitch, entirely on the gravel. The memorial forest is very interesting - with both well established and new areas of planting. Unfortunately there was confusion with our booking. We had a confirmatory e mail for our 4 night booking. We called at the Business Park first (it was raining) rather than going straight to the site, and discovered that although they had the email info our booking had not been put in the site book - and they only had a space for us for three nights! The staff were very apologetic, and these things do happen. We had a pleasant stay and would return if int he area.

Secluded little spot

We spent 3 nights at this woodland site. It is set among woodland and is shady and enclosed by trees. It's a good flat site, easy to access and the pitches are nicely spaced out. It is mainly grass and we had constant rain while we were there, but luckily managed to get off the pitch ok. There is public access through the site which didn't worry us but might be a consideration for others. A good spot to explore locally and a helpful sign on the site gives some good ideas of where to visit. Personally I think this is a good site for a short stay or stopover. All in all a good value for money site.

Beautiful and tranquil site

This is a lovely site and I do not agree that it needs some TLC! It is a CL, those of us who love CL's don't need toilet blocks, immaculate lawns or any other club or commercial site advantages.  What we want is peace and quiet and lovely surroundings and that's what you get. The utilities - waste water, fresh water etc. are easy to use, which is not always the case on CL's. The small 0.5 acres is set in a semi-circle and each pitch is separated from its neighbour, so means privacy, which is what we prefer.  Normally we would never go on a site smaller than 1 acre and prefer to tuck ourselves away in a corner (not all of us want to be "happy campers")  but in this case the size doesn't matter.  It's great for visiting Ashbourne and lots of other lovely towns in Derbyshire and of course a great walking area. and a stroll in the lovely wood is just right before dinner.

Could be a lovely site

Site peaceful but could do with some 'upgrading' by that I don't mean toilet blocks etc. The pitches are a little muddy and could be better if grassed over properly. I see some people thinks its a 'graveyard', not so its a memorial wood with the public sponsoring trees for all sorts of reasons. If caravanning for you, is going away from home to watch TV this site will not be for you and I suggest you try somewhere else. All in all its an OK site but desperately needs some seeing to.

Extremely disappointed with the site management!

The bank holiday weekend was our first outing with our new caravan. We booked onto this site will in advance & were really looking forward to our long weekend. We were told that on arrival pull onto the site then go & check in but there was no on there. The site was full, so we phoned the owners who informed us they were on holiday but our booking was confirmed & no one could help us until the following morning. They told us that we could go & ask each caravan whether they had booked or not, which surely is their job, not ours & not a very professional approach. Safe to say that trying to find a replacement site on a Friday of a bank holiday weekend at the last minute caused a lot of stress & meant we were not able to set up until very late at the alternative site. We will not be booking on this site in future and I think the owners need to look at their management skills. I have been caravanning since I can remember & have never made a booking to arrive & be told there is no space for us!!

peace and quiet

we turned up at this site and had the pick of the 5 pitches in fact we pitched in one then decided we wanted a different one so changed, we had no problem finding the site or entering, there is no toilet or shower but this wasn't a problem for us.there are notices up telling you where to go to pay and a number you can phone if you have any problems. the site has no security and no fencing to separate you off from the the public visiting the wood. but no one bothered us or entered the site area.and those that did visit were very quiet. At night it gets very dark, there is no lighting at all. we were very temped to go for a midnight walk but I was too scared ha-ha. I'm glad we didn't take any horror DVDs, it was so quiet all you can hear are birds singing. I didn't feel like we were in a cemetery as the other review had said.

Tranquil Weekend

Peaceful, tranquil little site, set in woods. 5 places very private. Entrance gate lift up, direct from public car park, felt a lttle vunerable at night, very dark from the trees, ( glad we had the dogs). Well maintained site, wildlife on the open lake, great walks around the wood. (Shock on arrival, felt like camping in a cemetary, surrounded by dedicated tree's, later found not just for death but weddings, births, or any occasion) No TV reception. Village pub a short walk away.
