Great Stopover near Glasgow

We stayed here for 1 night on a Scotland tour, access was good and we were made to feel welcome. Pitch was level, facilities were clean. There is a Toby Carvery within 3 minutes walking distance and a country park within walking distance down the lane (we spotted deer walking along this road!). Downside is that this site is right next to very busy roads, however this becomes white noise after a while as you get used to it. We would return here as a stopover but its not a holiday destination for us.

EASY SITE TO FIND

Do not be put off by comments about this being a noisy site. Yes you can here a gentle rumble of motorway traffic but this was not a problem to us. The site itself is flat and really spacious whichever pitch you choose. The facilities were beautifully warm and spotlessly clean. The perfect location for breaking a long journey north or south.

Excellent site but very noisy

This site is right by the junction of the M74 and the A725, so don't expect it to be quiet - it isn't, it's easily the noisiest Club site I've stayed on. BUT we have stayed here twice and will probably do so again, because of its excellent location. It is very easy to find as long as you take the right junction off the motorway and follow the simple directions in the club handbook. The site is flat, we found TV reception really good (although the Club handbook says it's not) and the facilities are what you would expect from the Club and are of course cleaned daily. We didn't use WiFi. You wouldn't choose this site for a peaceful, relaxing stay. As a night halt it's second to none being so close to the motorway, and for seeing the sights of Glasgow it's pretty good. There is a Toby Carvery directly opposite the entrance. Not much else apart from the country park in the immediate vicinity. It's quite a hike to Bellshill railway station, which has regular trains to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh and it's uphill all the way there, although obviously downhill all the way back! E-bikes make it an easy ride though and you can either go through the country park or straight up the cycle path alongside the busy A725.You can also go to the stations in Motherwell and Hamilton, but we used Bellshill so can't comment on the others. There is a huge Tesco Metro and a large Morrisons Store in Bellshill. Both have petrol stations too.

Excellent site

We have just left this campsite after stopping off on our way home from the NC500. We found the site very easily and were able to choose our pitch. The site is flat with well kept pitches surrounding an excellent facilities block in the middle of the park. The plants around the entrance is particularly well kept and the wardens clearly take pride in this. We had a lovely walk around the boating lake that was built a few years ago for the Commonwealth games and can be found by taking the small path through the woods directly opposite the site. We chatted to many locals on our way around who were extremely friendly and we finished off our day with an exceptional meal at the Toby Carvery round the corner from the site. After some of the disappointing reviews that have appeared on this site recently I felt it important to express how much we enjoyed our stay in this large and spacious site.

Overcrowded and overpriced

Site difficult to find coming from M74, then badly signed within Country Park. Pitch difficult to find, driving round in concentric circles with no help from the warden in Reception and most places too small (despite having booked). No privacy between crowded pitches with noisy children and dogs. Motorway noise. WiFi only at reception with nowhere to sit and use it. The joy of overpriced July camping at its worst! As a new member, I expected better and won't be renewing next year.

Poor management

Members for over 22 years and really disappointed with this site. As a family of 7 we booked a caravan pitch and a tent pitch. From day 1 two toilets in the men’s loo were blocked , maybe a sign? On the evening of day 6 we noticed water rising on the tent field and by midnight we were awoken by other campers to be notified that there was a flood and they helped move several tents further back, headlights illuminating the pitches. Some wardens appeared with torches but little else. They had knowledge of the problem and the water smelled. By 8am the next morning it had spread toward the toilet block and people were walking through it, no notices up warning of a possible health hazard and no cordons. The Water co arrived by 8am and a warden finally arrived at 8.15. Another warden was hosing and spreading the sewage by this point. People were still walking through the excrement. Our tent was ruined and needless to say we all left immediately. Luckily, as the road then collapsed. Water company responsible no doubt but criminal management by the site ream.

Comment from the Club:

We're sorry to learn of your experience during a holiday with this. The issue you describe was reported to Scottish water, when first identified at 8pm. The site staff were not sure what the cause was or where the water was coming from, but had advised guests nearest where it was to avoid it and offered for anyone in our tent field, that wanted, to move to our smaller tent field. Scottish water attended at midnight, although they were not able to resolve the matter until the next day. Anyone camping in our tent field at this time or affected by this we would encourage to send direct feedback to us via our 'contact us' page, if they haven't done so already, we can then review individual circumstances.

Awful experience

If you are travelling with children / teenagers avoid. This site was not at all family friendly. We were treated with a list of rules so that our three children did not upset the “proper members”. I’m not quite sure what they were meant to do other than sit quietly on IT. Motorway noise is horrendous - non stop all night. I dreamt of sleeping in the middle of a roundabout. On night 5 of 8 we were woken up by other campers as the field was “flooding”. Campers helped drag tents clear and light the field with headlights whilst wardens gave no practical assistance whatsoever ever - they did not even ask if there was anything they could do to help. They next morning the “flood was around the facilities block, road and camping field. Our tent and gazebo were covered in it. We suspected that it was sewage given the appearance and smell. Once again we had to approach wardens rather than any support / customer care being offered. On leaving we asked directly for confirmation that it was sewage. There was no sense of health and safety of those on site or management of a significant incident. Children were running and people washing up next to it - it was being trodden through the toilet block. The only at any direct contact with head office has been achieved is within 30 mins on leaving a negative review on trust pilot. We lost 3 nights of our holiday and have £600 worth of camping equipment in the bin.

Great for our stopover

Using Strathclyde as our stop over on way to Oban this was the ideal choice. Good motorway connections. Within the park. Warden knew how to get to all the places we needed to visit and able to give broad directions. Staff extremely helpful, knew available pitches and those least affected by road noise. All in all a brilliant stopover.

Great stay

We were staying at the site for the cycling world champs. Staff were very pleasant and informative. Site was close to Blantyre station where we dropped my daughter as she was volunteering at the BMX park. We also parked here for events at the velodrome. Central glasgow and beyond is easily reachable. We cycled to the amazing Chatelherault country park along the Clyde and Avon direct from the site. Also walked around the lake. Facilities were obviously very new and always clean. There was a flood but this was from outside the camp and nothing the wardens or club could do about this. All in all can’t fault the site or location and we will definitely return.

Terrible

DONT BRING A FAMILY!!! Arrived greeted with abrupt rudeness, a lot of passive aggressive behaviour from the staff at one point I had to ask one of them to just stop shouting he was yelling for no reason. Toilets only cleaned and restocked once a day Continuous noise from the motorway Camping area floods as soon as it rains Bins overflow Only people they want are in their late 60s onwards we were even told “proper members have complained!” Been a member for 5 years We attended the world BMX championships therefore or kids ride bikes but apparently only older people on electric bikes or road bike are allowed our children were shouted at chased
