Hi… has anyone found comprehensive flexible european health travel insurance. We have been touring extensively for 6 years now… multiple trips a year… longest trip hasn't been longer than 90 days but it could have been ( we are EU Passport holders  so not restricted by the Schengen 90/180 rules). We take part in extreme activities (watersports cycling winters sports).  Both 65…No horrendous pre existing conditions ( that we know about ). 1st year we were able to get an annual 90 days max per trip… as many trips per year as wanted) that was discontinued… now we cant find any annual that has no trip limit of anywhere near 90 even with added cost… all seem to limit to 180 days max per year now …and now adding in return crossing must be booked stipulations…. Any suggestions out there?

Annual travel policies always have time limits per individual trip. For really long time overseas you have to look at single trip policies - they may be marketed as Backpacker policies (but on sale to all) with anything up to a full year abroad. Some are worldwide and some exclude America and thus are cheaper.

My policy is through my bank account and will be Aviva when my renewal with UK Insurance runs out later in the year.

The Aviva policy allows you, as does UK Insurance, to extend the 31 days limit up to 120 days for which you pay an additional premium but this then applies until next renewal date, which tended to be from the date of upgrade otherwise it's a rolling monthly one.

Thanks for your responses…. I will look more closely at backpackers policies….we do have the nationwide insurance but since renewal its now underwritten by aviva and limited to a total of 180 days per year…i know we’re very fortunate to be able to do more than this but we are not alone…and we now need to have a return booking before we set off ( which we never do as we dont know when we are coming back and from which port!!!) and we need to be able to state  ( and purchase any necessary trip extensions) before each trip in the policy year…a one off extension doesnt cover all trips as it did when underwritten by uk insurance… and i believe 70 days may be the max extension possible…. Earlier this year we had to return 4 days into a 3 month trip due to a family incident so any extensions paid for would have been wasted.  Single trip insurance also is dependent on knowing how long you are expecting to be away…. So just wondering if anybody has found that golden annual policy that allows for such flexibility and covers greater than 180 days away with a minimum maximum days per trip of 90 days????

Correction …just checked tge nationwide policy details….yes an extension of up to 120 days can be purchased but tge extension myst be purchased for each trip and i think before you set off …so ad hoc extensions while you are away …unless for emergencies can not be accomodated…. I think the max 180 days in total comes under the British resident clause…

The Club's Red Pennant used to cover some of those lengths of stay but I suspect in recent years that has been curtailed. It might be worth ringing the Club as they can sometimes suggest alternative insurers.
