Motorhome SatNav Advice

Hi all, I am very much a newbie to all things to do with motorhoming and will soon be setting off on our first small adventure in the coming weeks. I would like some advice as to whether the Avtex satnavs are worth the money or would my bog standard Garmin be perfectly adequate for most UK travel.

I would be interested in reading your views on this and discover which satnav most members generally use.

Best regards,

Mike.

The best sat nav I have used was a TomTom with the Camper Maps installed. It took me safely to many places all across Europe. In my current motorhome I have a built in TomTom which is not as reliable, it has a tendency to take short cuts down narrow roads so if I don't like the look of the roads I just carry on. I don't think any sat nav is fool proof and it pays to look at the route before you set off. If in reviewing the route I am not happy I tend to set a waypoint to force it the way I want to go. Most sat navs have a facility to review the destination which is often where they go wrong. Some sat navs allow you to pre-program a route on a computer and then load it to the sat nav, probably the only way to be sure it takes you where you want to go?

I just use Google maps on the phone, always up to date. You might need something more specialised if it is a long van you have.

I think your bog standard Garmin will be fine. It’s what we use coupled with a hefty dose of common sense and a paper map for ‘just in case’. We once had a MH with the Garmin Avtex camper sat nav as part of the kit and, no, I don’t think they’re worth the extra money.

Most satnav system will guide you reliably provide they are set and used correctly.  It is well worth studying and understanding how to use the one you choose.

The UI of some is easier to understand and set than others which I think makes them more popular and therefore thought to be better.
