I’ve recently bought a 2011 Freelander 2 auto and was wondering whether using sport mode might be a better option for towing my Coachman 520 MTPLM 1465kg?

Any comments much appreciated

Have you tried it to see how it tows in Sport and does your car handbook contain any guidance? Those are usually the best places to start👍🏻

Depends on the road I would think. If lots of hills & the gearbox wants to hunt between gears, then Sports mode might help .... I used to select Sports in my Omega & Senator before it on occasion, but it wasn't needed all the time. Also Sport might very well prevent your car from selecting a higher gear when it might be able to support it.

Suck it & see 👍

Thanks for the replies. The handbook is no help at all I’m afraid.

I tried to see what they recommend the tyre pressures should  be as well, but nothing. Am going to speak to the local L/Rover specialist.

Tyre pressures are on the bottom of the offside B pillar,if I remember correctly laden pressures were the  same as normal.

Thanks Vulcan for the info on the tyre pressures. It’s a while since I had a LR and my previous towcar had increased tyre pressures for towing. I’ll try normal pressure and see how we get on.

Not ex RAF by any chance?

Sadly no, I think my respect for the Vulcan started when my parents took me to Finningley air show every year in the sixties when the star attraction was the four minute scramble of the Vulcans.

OK, so it's a Freelander 1 TD4 auto and the van is 1485kg.

Tows very well in "Drive" and only really needs to be switched to "Sport" when climbing steep or really long drag hills.
