Renault Grand Scenic 1.9tDci can't tow ANY Caravan

I’ve just bought an Adria Altea 542DT and according to my car manual, it cannot tow my caravan.

The manual says to calculate the Braked Trailer weight, do the following calculation:

Find the MTR and subtract the MMAC.

MTR being ‘Total Train Weight’ and MMAC being the ‘Maximum Permissible All-up Weight’.

These figures are located on a plate on the driver’s door and are 3050 & 2195 respectively.

Therefore: 3050 – 2195 = 855kg

In other words my Renault Grand Scenic CANNOT TOW ANY CARAVAN with a fully loaded car.

My caravan dealer also looked up my car on a system he said insurers use and this also indicated that I would be illegally towing.

I’ve discussed this with Renault themselves, had a letter from them (that refers to the calculation in the manual only!) but verbally admitted that I was correct.

So, if you tow with a Renault Grand Scenic and have a fully laden car when towing – WARNING – you could be doing so illegally.

 Any comments?
