SIM card for Discovery

We've just taken possession of a nearly new Discovery. It has more bells and whistles than our previous one and I'm trying to get to grips with them.

To take advantage of some features we need a Data Sim. Has anyone any experience of this and advice on which to buy?

I've got a sim card in my audi. its used for live traffic information, details of local fuel prices, weather, etc. It all so uses google street view  I use the traffic and fuel price features but not much more. When i got the sim card about 4 years ago i got the cheapest i could, £5 a month which gives me 500mb of data and i've never used more than half of it

Don't know if its same as my Discovery Sport but Id suggest speaking to dealer. After initial period renewing the sim is only £30 a year and gives access to some services such as the phone app and calls to emergency services and breakdown cover

the cheapest one you get can, pay as you g, it is so the car's software can update it self I think. Did it give any suggested data usage?

Thank you for the replies. When we got car I asked if it had a sim (having read some user guides etc), but was told no - but cheap to buy on Amazon.

The "Remote" App on my phone doesn't need it, but travel type apps do - so I've bit the bullet and bought a cheap "3 - Internet with Legs" one off Amazon. We probably don't need it, but if the technology is there I want to at least look at it!

The Remote App came "free" with a three year subscription. It was a management car so maybe The Management removed the sim.

...it is so the car's software can update it self...

I think that sort of updating is done when the vehicle is serviced by the main dealer, but I stand ready to be corrected.

well maybe, but on a different forum someone posted how once they got a sim for a Volvo XC60, more items were added to various menus on the infotainment screens. Are you talking engine management perhaps?

We use 3 Internet with legs in our XC90 although to be honest so long as we have a phone in the car we don't really need it as the car just hotspots with the phone. The one we do find really useful which does require a data link is using Google maps with Apple Car Play as you can select the satelite view useful when abroad and the 3 data sim is good for this.

Is it me or is life getting just that bit too complicated?

Sometimes it can feel a bit like that but on the other hand some of the stuff having a data link gives you is really useful, like the real time traffic info or the ability for the car to call the emergency services if you have an accident or report your exact position if you breakdown.
