Towcar of the year awards '23 -EVs abound

I was really please to see the number of EVs in the awards this year, with my own (Polestar 2) taking the spot for the EV Towcar category. Whilst they are still expensive, in the class 5 (1500kg - 1700kg) category (won by the XC40 EV) there were two Hyundais, The Santa Fe and Ioniq5, at almost the same price - the EV being slightly cheaper, and only a smidge more than the Skoda Superb.

There is a great article on Caravan Times, here, by one of the judges from the competition which makes for interesting reading.

As summarised by Andrew Ditton in his latest video, if you can live with the drawbacks around towing while charging, and range on a single charge, they really do work.

The UK charging infrastructure still has a way to go, but is improving daily, and as time passes we are going to see more in the used market - and I think the understanding of battery life will grow to the point of trust for their lifetime.

I think the future for caravaning after 2030 is looking bright.

As TW says, it depends. Personally I have never got to less than about 8-10% battery (something like 12 to 14 miles range) before deciding it was time to stop anyway.
Honestly, after 100 miles towing, we are ready for a break.

How long does it take to recharge? About as long as it takes for all of us to use the loo, have something to eat and stretch our legs. It does depend on the charger, the car, the conditions and potentially if someone else is using a charger too.

Do we ever hang around waiting for the car to finish charging? Occasionally, but that is measured in minutes , usually no longer than you might hang around waiting for a fuel tank to fill.

Do you always need to unhitch the caravan at a charging point, if so does the possible lack of caravan parking availability create stress ( in addition to range anxiety)

Every tower realises that it is not always possible to find space for an outfit at a service area, nevermind when trying to use an recharging point.

As of yet, I have not found a location where “hitched up charging” is possible, but they do exist. The Andrew Ditton YouTube clip linked from the original post shows a few locations like that, so charging stop designers do have them in mind.

Thats said, so far, I have not had any problem finding somewhere to leave the caravan while we charge. The carpark locations usually have some sort of space that works for a caravan just fine.

Volvo EX90 starts at £96k - the world as gone mad.

About the same price as the Polestar 3.

It’s a ridiculous amount of money for a car. Having said that, I thought 55k was a ridiculous amount if money for a Polestar 2 (and somehow I have one), and 35k was a ridiculous amount of money for a fiat 500, yet I have one on order.
Meanwhile, 35p is a ridiculous amount for 1KWh of electricity, £1.95 for a litre of diesel, £2 for a block or butter and £7 for a pint of beer.

The world has indeed gone mad…

I can only say that I'm glad that some are more easily parted with their cash than me as that leaves mere mortals like me some used cars to buy at more sensible money. £35k for a Fiat 500 of any kind is insane.

Would you believe a brand new Ford fiesta starts at 19,995 and goes up to over 28k?

The fiat 500E convertible I am getting is pretty much the maxed out spec. There are much lower price ones available, but even so. New stuff is very expensive at the moment…

What is possibly more crazy is the car we ordered in May (actually 34k, not 35) is now 38k to order! 10% increase in 6 months.

It must just be me then. I don't struggle money wise but I'd not pay that kind of money for a small Eurobox what ever badge was on it. I've had my 14 plate ML350 for 3 & half years & paid £26000 for it from a main dealer. I could have bought a cheaper ML350 but this one is well spec'd.
