Towing with an Automatic?

We now tow with a Sportage auto, and it is far better we find than our manual version was , ,even though the road tax is more

2 pedals good ..... 3 pedals bad 😉

Though bare in mind there are different flavours of automatic. I've no idea what a Mondeo has, but Ford's Powershift (an automated manual) has its critics.

Automatics are fine - until you want the precise control at low speed that one gets with a clutch.

Not a problem with ours, its very easy at what ever speed is needed

I'm still a beginner at this but in my (limited) experience towing is fine with a manual until I have to perform the dreaded reversing manoeuvre.

I'm still not too good at this so the clutch on my manual car comes in for a fair bit of abuse because I take that much longer to reverse.

I would definite consider an automatic for our next car, either that or invest in a motor mover!

I can be every bit as controlled, and more, with my auto towcar (not with my Smart's automated manual) as you can be with a manual. And with no clutch slip.

As above, bear in mind that the DSG type auto have not one clutch to burn out, but two.

I had been using an automatic till driving back from Abbey Wood this year and got a "Transmission Service Warning" message. Phoned garage while on A303 and they said ok to drive back. Did and just got back. Got transmission oil replaced and then got 3rd gear problems so had to change cars.

Could be that my car was 2002 and never had a transmission oil change (nor a filter), but from what I read is something that needs to be checked.

I thought Ford were fitting torque converter auto's on new models now. If having trouble at slow speeds forward/backward then use the brake peddle along with the throttle.

Maybe Ford are fitting 'proper autos' now ..... Vauxhall gave up on their Easytronic automated manual 🤔
