We are planning a trip to the outer Hebrides in May this year in our 7.0m long motorhome. The plan is to get the ferry from Oban to Castlebay and work our way up to lochmaddy to get the ferry back to Uig. Could anyone with experience of this trip please give us any advise and recommend any campsites and places to visit. Also what length of time is needed to see the island at at leisurely pace, and are there plenty of fuel stations?.

Many thanks

We did the trip in reverse in our 6m PVC. We crossed from Ullapool to Stornoway, worked our way down the islands and returned via the Barra to Oban route. We spent about 2 weeks on the islands and saw most of the sights. If you’re into walking, you might want to allow longer.

This has been discussed several times on the forum (where your thread will probably be moved to) and a search might reveal some info.

The various websites, including CalMac, suggest places of interest and campsites. I can list the ones we used if needed but it was a few years ago now and you might be better looking up the current offerings. Don’t forget to check for CLs and the other club's CSs if you’re a member. I’ll put a few links at the end. Shout out if you need any more info.

We had no trouble getting fuel or shopping but don’t expect to find many places to eat out. Everything closes on a Sunday as the islanders are followers of Sunday Observance and you are requested not to even hang washing out on a Sunday.
