Road Surface in Belgium

In the ACSI book under Belgium it says "... road surface can sometimes be damaged". We are travelling from Calais to Italy via Strasbourg and Switzerland in September and last time we did that we came back through Belgium.  My wife say she won't do that again as the motorways were bumpy (lthough the Ardennes is more attractive than Reims/Nancy). Does anybody have recent experience of this route?
