Towing in the Alps?

I'm new to Caravanning as of last year and will be Towing down to the South of France in Summer to a site that I've visited and stayed at in a mobile home for holidays for the past 5 years.

I'm fairly comfortable with towing if not a bit on the safe side ..

The question is, en route back from the South we've been invited to stay with friends in the Alps near Lake Geneva .. has anyone visited the area towing and can offer any advice.

I've looked at Tom Tom and Google maps and both route you through Grenoble on the way up but having carefully looked at  maps at this moment I'll probably come up the main auto route past Valence then after Lyon head North East again on Auto route to the South and East side of Lake Geneva.

Has anyone done this before or can advise as to whether its possible with a van.

It's 50 - 60km more than the Sat Nav route but seems more caravan friendly.
