Awning rules

We have visited 5 different sites since reopening and at every one seen mostly motorhomes on non awning pitches using roll out awnings. Have not yet seen any with sides fitted so maybe people think this is ok. I am not opposed to this practice as I think the latest pitch designations are in many cases OTT. What I want to know is if this practice has been "allowed" and the site managers have been told to turn a blind eye,if so I will look at joining this set when we can't get an awning pitch but would use a roll out awning.

Hi, it is ten years since we were wardens and we were advised that an awning pitch could accommodate  3 things in 8 metres

caravan/motorhome

car

awning

a non awning pitch could accommodate 2 things in 5 metres

caravan/motorhome

car OR awning of 2 metres or less.

It makes sense, leaving a safe distance of at least 3 metres.

But those rules may have been superseded, and the non awning pitch name is misleading, perhaps they should be called 3 element pitch or two element pitch?

I think you have to be careful what you consider an awning. To me an awning is an enclosed unit designed to be up for the length of your stay. These are clearly not allowed on a non awning pitch.  A roll out canopy is just that a canopy which can be retracted in minutes.

It might make things clearer if the Club actually insisted that canopies were retracted at night.

We have a swift basecamp.  It's a small unit, and the awning goes on the back. Awningvand caravan combined are about the same length as a standard caravan  (we don't have the Vango awning)

Would we be able to use our awning on a non awning pitch?

It might vary site to site depending on pitch layout/size. Caravans vary a lot in length so 'standard' is a bit vague. I suggest you establish the total length of your outfit in metres and then seek clarification from the club.

If our contributing warden Jolly Kernow rocks up, he might be able to help.

Good afternoon

So, my first thoughts are why book a non awning pitch in the first place? Awning pitches are bigger and more plentiful. If you did want a non awning pitch I'd suggest giving the site a call and asking the staff their advice.

When inputting your outfit length put the total length down as van and awning combined. That will assure you of a suitable pitch. Hope this helps

Just a genuine question here.  When you say:

"put the total length down as van and awning combined. That will assure you of a suitable pitch."

who sees the dimension?

How does this work in terms of a suitable pitch, if people can simply chose whatever pitch they want?

This has always puzzled me, every time I enter my outfit length (or confirm) when booking.

So reading back through the thread, an awning is enclosed and a canopy is open. On a non-awning pitch a motorhome is allowed to put up a canopy as long as the 3m fire regs rule is met. Is a caravan allowed to put up a canopy as long as the 3m fire regs rule is met?

Yes I know somebody will say book an awning pitch, but at times these are not available.

I suspect you could not use a wind out canopy on a caravan on a non-awning pitch for the simple reason a caravan will also have a car on pitch. However, pitches and sites differ.

I don’t take the slightest bit of notice of awning/non awning designation. If it’s available and I want to stay there I’ll happily book whatever is available. I certainly wouldn’t deny myself because it’s got the wrong colour peg! Nobody has taken umbrage (so far).
