Cirencester Park access road

We were out walking near Cirencester today so thought we'd divert to wander past the club site to see how things looked.

Well, not sure if this is good news or bad, but the access road has been diverted..

So - good news - for anyone with a pothole aversion - it's been resurfaced and the tarmac is now billiard table smooth (apart from the inevitable speed humps!)

Not such good news - instead of a long straight road with plenty of wide stretches to allow for units to pass it is now very narrow and winding, with large boulders each side at the entrance and just a couple of small lay bys for passing, so heaven help you if you meet another unit coming in or out.

I can't see any practical alternative to the "off by 12 and no arrivals before 1" arrangement. We'll just have to wait and see - well, not us obviously! wink

To be fair to the College, it seems to be a case of 'He who pays the piper calls the tune'.  If the Club wanted a wider better road then they should have offered some cash.

I can guarantee that to improve the situation now will cost more than it would have at design stage. One of the "rules of thumb" in Construction used to be that remedial works cost 7 times what it would have cost to have built in correct in the first place.

I agree. I think the College are now saying if retrospectively you think the road is not suitable, hard cheese as we won't invest anymore of our limited budget on changing the road. However they haven't closed the door completely on it being changed if others are willing to contribute. or indeed, meet the full cost of any changes. I think I may have said upthread that I feel the Club should be far more willing to make an investment in access roads as surely it is to the benefit of members. Another advantage is that that you are more likely to have a say in how that investment is spent. Perhaps there is something about the changes that we don't yet know from the Club perspective but from what we have seen so far it seems a right mess!!! I suppose we only have a few more days before we see the real impact on the new road when the site reopens. I suspect that even with allocated arrival times units will be queued along its length. Hope nobody wants to go the the  Tennis or Cricket Club!!!

The silence from the club is deafening.

It is supposed to be OUR club - not a remote business.

If, as the College state, the CMC did not take part in the consultation process - why didn’t they?

If the CMC did take part - how have we ended up with an access road as awful as this one?

Don't forget Rowena posted the following. I'd not expect a blow by blow account of ongoing discussions.

 Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you all know we are aware of the issue and are currently speaking with the College (who put the new road in) to look at alternatives. I will update you all ASAP when I have further information on this.

They probably won't comment until they have more to say? Whether we get the full story of course is another matter. The club will often tell us how they have resolved a situation but rarely give us much background information as to how they got into the situation in the first place.

"Hope nobody wants to go the the Tennis or Cricket Club!!!"

That is indeed a major consideration - arrivals and departures, in fact all site users will be very dependent on the good will of locals. It may not be a problem whilst allocated arrival times are being given, but when it returns to the free for all I can foresee major confrontations at peak times. It'll only take, say, half a dozen arrivals at the same time,  which is not unusual at the site, to cause big hold ups.

Hasn't been a 'Club' for many a year.....and just who is accountable, and to whom, for the many departmental 'screwups'.....just pay your (club) membership and be quiet..

As I have said before...time for some new blood on the top floor.

The following now appears on the ‘Prices’ page for Cirencester Park:

This Club campsite will open from 4 July 2020 and will be adapted to the new social distancing and safety requirements set out by the UK government. Our priority is first and foremost the health and safety of our staff, our members, our guests and the local communities.

Despite the Club, the Tennis Club and the Cricket Club submitting their objections to Cirencester College relating to its proposed new access road earlier this year, the College submitted a planning application and undertook the works to form the new access road in May 2020. The application and subsequent works failed to address the various Clubs' concerns specifically relating to the boulders and the blind bend close to the start of the access road. The Club has been working with the College and Bathurst Estate (the Club's landlord) to try and identify a mutually acceptable solution to address these issues. The solution needs to balance the College's need to ensure the safety of its staff, pupils and visitors with the various Clubs' needs for a safe and manageable access to their sites. The Club's Head of Estates has held two site meetings with the College's Operations Director over the last 2 weeks in order to try and rectify this issue ahead of the site reopening on 4 July. A further meeting with the College and the Club's contractors is to be held on Tuesday 30 June to agree and mark-up the proposed solution on site. The works, once finally agreed, will be undertaken as soon as possible thereafter.

A somewhat different version of events to that published in the planning documents .......

The fact that a meeting is to be held today, to agree and mark up the proposed solution, which will be undertaken ASAP, sounds encouraging.

The bit they have put in their directions to site not so much.

Please Note: We have introduced a new, single-track access road to the site, which is bordered with boulders to protect the verge. Passing places are available but visitors are asked not to arrive until after 1pm to minimise congestion. Please take extra care and be aware that storage users and motorhomes may be departing site at other times

Perhaps once it is agreed today, the club will share.🤔
