Directions to Old Hartley Site, Whitley Bay

Can anyone help please.  We will be travelling back from the north and stopping off at Old Hartley and would have taken the A1, A19 and then the A190 onto the A193; but directions on the club site route you onto the A191 and then the A193 (and into Whitley Bay from the south).  Whilst our preferred route is only 4-5 miles shorter it seems to have the advantage of missing the town, but as CC directions are usually the safest option, we wondered whether anyone has tried the A190 and found it to be OK.
