The last of the Spitfire girls Mary Ellis, who flew 76,  different aircraft including 400 Spitfires, during the Second World War, has died at her home on the Isle of Wight aged 101.  You were a true hero - RIP

Sad indeed but 101 is a good age. One of my sons, a qualified pilot and instructor had the honour last year of ferrying Mary from the IOW to Cambridge for an event. He did offer her the controls at one point but she declined.

In this day and age of over used superlatives and hyperbole, with a mindset of "What have you done for me recently?" it is a relief to come across a real Hero or Heroine. One who actually put their life on the line and thought nothing of it.

We have recently lost two of the best in Geoffrey Wellum and now Mary Ellis. They were idolised by my RAF serving father, even if he didn't know their names, and rightly so. Thank you to both of them.
