Mary Ellis

I take my hat off to these fine ladies who did such a magnificent job.  RIP Mary.

Sad indeed but 101 is a good age. One of my sons, a qualified pilot and instructor had the honour last year of ferrying Mary from the IOW to Cambridge for an event. He did offer her the controls at one point but she declined.

In this day and age of over used superlatives and hyperbole, with a mindset of "What have you done for me recently?" it is a relief to come across a real Hero or Heroine. One who actually put their life on the line and thought nothing of it.

We have recently lost two of the best in Geoffrey Wellum and now Mary Ellis. They were idolised by my RAF serving father, even if he didn't know their names, and rightly so. Thank you to both of them.

Yes a sad loss, she was one year older than the RAF itself.  I hope she realised how much she paved the way for all future pilots, male and female. Thank you.
