The Ospreys are back !!

April starts the season of 'Osprey hunting' for me .

So off to RSPB Loch Garten, on-line of course, and the sites up, just about, but no Ospreys as yet.

So over to Scottish Wildlife Trusts "Loch of The Lowes" Website and, and not one but two Ospreys & mating in full view of the cameras ! Its not the aged "Lady" but a new female now in residence, so we'll have to see if the old girl turns up at all. Well she is believed to be in the high twenties now, darn near Geriatric as far as Ospreys go ! I understand Rutland has a number of arrivals so I must keep watching Loch Garten for more tales of Bad Bird Behaviour !!

I agree micky, there are very few places in England where they can nest and breed with impunity. There was a report earlier this week which stated, I think, that there are about 200 breeding pairs in Scotland!!

However saying that there is good news from Cumbria, as the pair at Roudsea Woods have returned and appear to be sitting on egg(s).

More news from Scotland is that the nest at Loch of the Lowes now has it's first egg of the year which was laid at 10:48 today, 21 days after the pair arrived, the same as last year, and a 2nd egg was laid at the Loch Arkaig next at 05:55 this morning.

I think it’s more a case of ‘they could nest with impunity’ given a fighting chance from ‘us’. We have pushed too many species to towards extinction and some to extinction in the UK through ‘our’ own selfish actions. The Osprey projects are a fantastic example of what can be done. Red Kites, Beavers, White Tailed Eagles, Storks and Cranes too. Many more species and their habitats, both flora and fauna could be included in our efforts. What I find mystifying is that a couple of decades ago there was real hope for our rivers. Now we hear almost daily about the appalling state of the vast number of our rivers, these being pretty much all polluted to death with excrement and deliberate or thoughtless chemical waste.

Aylth, 2nd egg at 09:03 on 18th, 3rd on 21st.

Dyfi, 3rd egg at 06:05 on 18th.

Foulshaw, 3rd egg on 21st,

Glaslyn, 1st egg at 18:08 on 22nd,

Kielder, Nest No.4, 2nd egg on 19th, 3rd at 15:30 on 21st; Nest No.5, 1st at 19:47 on 22nd; Next No.7, 3rd on 20/21st.

Loch Arkaig, 3rd egg at 02:26 on 20th.

Loch Garten, 1st egg at 10:47 on 21st, 2nd at 14:06 on 24th.

Loch of the Lowes, 2nd egg at 10:53 on 21st, 3rd at 20:47 on 23rd.

Poole Harbour, 2nd egg at 12:21 on 18th, 3rd at 14:22 on 21st, 4th st 19:15 on 24th.

There is also a second nest with a pair of Ospreys which has been spotted at Threaves!

Glaslyn, 2nd egg at 12:44 on 25th, 3rd egg at 08:07 on 28th

Kielder Nest 5A, 2nd egg at about 20:39 on 26th, 3rd egg at 13:57 on 28th

Loch Garten, 3rd egg at 13:05 on 27th

Tweed Valley Nest 2, 3 eggs laid as of 28th.

Thanks ADP. I think that most of the nests that are being filmed and/or monitored have their full compliment of eggs now. It will be the wait now for them to hatch, although there could well be some untoward occurrences, which I will post it they result in egg/parent loss.

Just watched last night’s Countryfile. Fabulous piece about the Rutland ospreys and that wonderful matriarch Maya, what a star. Well worth viewing this episode, a very informative series and a gem from the BBC.
