Montana’s are the beasts of the Clematis world DD, at least some are. Great for covering an old building, or running along a long wall or fence, but they need to be savagely pruned every couple of years. We have a couple that must be close to 15 metres in length, I have hacked one right back this year. Stay away from Montana’s and you can get some really nice ones that climb no more than six/eight feet, and die back almost to ground level over Winter. Good for getting some height and colour into a border if grown up an obelisk. I have a couple, different flowering times, up each side of two arches, mixed in with climbing roses. They are easy to grow as well, just a couple of things to get right.πŸ˜„

Sometimes things go badly wrong! My OH is now banned from ladders (rather ironic considering he was a firefighter). But steer clear of things like Montana’s, and you will be well rewarded. I have a thug of a grapevine that I used to wrestle with every year, it was kill or cure this year, as we took all the posts out that it climbed down, and put in a couple of rose arches. Despite cutting it down to a stump, it’s now up to top of arch, and showing some tiny bunches of grapes! I swear you can see it growing if you watch itπŸ˜‚

Have you got these? The pink one is Princess Diana but I've lost the name of the pretty little lilac one. They do well in shade and we've had good cuttings from them too. They're in flower now and will repeat. smile

Thanks. smile Tomorrow I'll have a crawl round in the undergrowth as OH assures me there is a label somewhere, the mystery will be solved one way or another (it's a very pale all over lilac colour.)

Thanks hosathousey. smile

laughing In the interests of this thread I've now crawled into the undergrowth and found a label on my mystery clematis (which I must say is growing well in deep shade and is smothered in flowers just now.) It's a Viticella, named Betty Corning. LINK And as a bonus it's scented.
