I dont have marines any more but do still run a large freshwater tank with Malawi Cichlids and throughout my fishkeeping career have allways been a fan of Eheim in spite of the premium prices. At the moment I am using Eheim in the sump and Eheim feeders to feed them whilst we are away. You are going to need quite a large canister for a tank  that size and with the amount its going to cost, even if its going cost a bit more than mail order I would be inclined to go to one of the fish "superstores" like Ripples and ask for a demonstration before buying

Thanks for all your views....OH has researched no end and we have been on forums....Eheim is a top runner at the moment especially from  the noise point of view, it’s really useful to hear what other members have encountered :)

Are there any marine aquarium enthusiasts out there ? We are on our 3rd tropical aquarium at the moment and are venturing into a marine one after a couple of years of research. It was delivered last week and we set it up with a Fluval FX6 canister filter, unfortunately after 1 week we have had to return the filter due to the noise it emitted, the tank is in our living room and it was soooo noisy you could actually hear it upstairs, and that is with clean water in it ( not dirt or grit) as we have not introduced fish yet, so we are back to square one. We need an efficient canister filter for over 300 litres, that runs quietly....a low hum is obviously acceptable but not like the one we have just returned. 
We are researching and have spoken to fish keeping places but usually find they advise the ones they sell so not sure how unbiased their opinions are....just thought I would put it out there and see what if anything we get back. We have a couple of alternatives in the top 3 but after Fluval and the cost of them we would like some unbiased opinions of what you have, would not touch, would recommend etc?
