Calor bottles discontinued

Serious consequences for smaller campervans and caravans...

"Calor Retail Stockists will receive individual communication on this as the letters are due to hit later this week.

Changes to our cylinder range

From 1st February 2023 the following cylinders will be discontinued: Cube, 3.9kg Propane, 4.5kg Butane, 6Lite Propane and 12kg Butane cylinders.

Why have we done this?

Improving our cylinder service is a priority. Our existing range of cylinders is creating complexity within our supply chain. This means longer change over times and reduced filling capacity on high volume key sizes. That’s why we’ve taken the difficult decision to reduce our cylinder range, simplifying the business.

We realise this change will affect customers that rely on these sizes, but we know these changes are necessary to significantly improve our cylinder service.

Suitable Alternatives

There are suitable alternatives to these cylinder sizes within our range, or within the Campingaz range. For example, customers looking for a 3.9kg Propane can be offered a 6kg Propane, and those looking for a 4.5kg Butane offered a 7kg Butane.

For more information on suitable alternatives and safely changing the regulator, visit www.calor.co.uk/cylinder-range-faq      "

Checked with our local Flogas depot, they do have 6kg bottles but as we are not currently a customer (we are for bulk LPG) and don't have one of their bottles they can't help. They are only able to do a swap if you currently have one of their bottles.

I suspect they are trying to be fair to their existing clientele as Calors news may have taken them by surprise as well.

Yes I'm sure you are right.

Burgandy, good of you to post that could be helpful to some folk.

Fortunately I printed out the information on bottle exchange from Calor's web site.

"You can exchange a gas bottle within the same group . . ."

The Small Category is shown as 3.9kg propane, 4,5kg butane, 6kg propane lite, 6kg propane and 7kg butane.  No doubt they will try to deny this to anyone without the original Cylinder Refil Agreement as their get out.

So what do they expect to happen to the tens of thousands of the 3.9/4.5kg bottles lying around the country?   Landfill, or perhaps people trying to take them apart to use for something else?

We took our empty 3.9kg propane to Morrisons this afternoon, and exchanged it for a 6kg propane, no problems. Hope information is useful for others.

As I understand  it you will need to produce the original  hire agreement documents to ge a refund. I wonder how many could as most of us have accumulated  bottle collections from other sources and never with any paperwork.

Posted on 02/02/2023 14:55

Just having a paper sort out of filing cabinet and in the Caravan file came across several original hire documents including the original Butane small cylinder bottle acquired on 30/08/1990 for £16 plus 15%VAT.

Apparently I will get 25% back if returned before 12 year deadline. I have 3 others but no chance of seeing any money back.

T's & C's re your initial CRA...

https://www.calor.co.uk/gas-bottles/refills-and-returns/returns

As you say David, your refund will depend on how long your refill agreement has been in place.....

No refund! If that's the case they certainly will not get any back from me,  I have a full "LIGHT" and two 3.5 propane and the bottles will be thrown over a hedge somewhere!

I assume that’s a joke. Your recycling centre is a far safer way of disposing of them.👍🏻

See my post Birdseye. Refunds are or at least were given with depreciating percentages up to 12 years but you'll need a copy of your contract.

As TW says I also hope you were joking in which case use the emojis. You'll probably get a few bob from a scrap merchant. The UK has enough of a litter problem as it is.

As a user of Calor's "Lite" ever since we bought our caravan in 2016 I've been trying to find stockists for FloGas locally, (Northampton) but the website is greyed out and won't let me enter location, nor  will it show anything properly. Are they holding back for some reason, or is it just my browser playing silly games?

I also  looked at Gaslight's website, but at £200+ for a cylinder I looked away again.

The website is working for me on a safari browser. However, it didn’t want to let me in when I pressed accept cookies but did when I rejected them. It still seemed to work OK for finding retailers.
