Irrational ‘fear’ or what?

Promoting the NC500 came back to bite them. 

 Wasn't there talk of a tourism tax, sounds as though it was justified because that could have been used to pay for Rangers. There is a good guide note about wild camping on the C&CC web pages >here<

I don't understand your title of your post Micky.

If the ranger service reduced the incidents of irresponsible behaviour from the travelling tourists and the service is to be disbanded doesn't it naturally follow that without supervision a lot of the problems will recur? A fear of this happening doesn't seem irrational but entirely merited.

Why is it that a minority of irresponsible people always spoil it for the majority (I'm hoping it's a minority)? It's the same everywhere when talking about society. I've not seen anyone littering in our neighbourhood but it's there, mostly fast food detritus. Someone's spoilt it for us responsible ones.

i summise then that if you arrive in a MH and stay for a couple of days in a lay bye with all your picnic and bbq gear outside this is not classified as wild camping and is illegal,

I say this to myself at least once per week WN when i see puddles of soapy water and meal leftovers left behind in beach side car parks and hot disposable bbq's stuffed into bins

You’re probably right, may be not quite the right word, WN. More of an irrational justification for disbanding the Ranger Service maybe. Possibly the money would be better spent on other things and if it was used to create proper aire style overnight stopping places then the local communities may just benefit financially, just like they do elsewhere in Europe. But here we seem to have a somewhat irrational fear of copying things which work over there. 

Yes, I’d also agree that the minority always seem to spoil things. I’d also suggest that ‘our’ lack of forward thinking and seemingly innate wish to carry on with old ways hampers many suggested initiatives in many aspects of British lives.

some 20 years ago when we lived in Scotland, on my bucket list was to qualify for a PSV licence and drive tour coaches, I know must have been crazy, but i achieved this and for 2 years i drove service coaches/tour coaches in Scotland.

Most of my experience was doing tours etc starting in Perth - Dundee - Aberdeen- Mcduff - Inverness, 20 years ago the road infrastructure was such that sometimes driving a 56 seater coacch was very difficult, so has the road infrastructure improved in the last 20 years?  sadly not, so the introduction of "aire style overnight stoping places", would only encourage even more "larger" type vehicles onto an already congested road network.

I am not sure how France compares in size vs population to the UK, but i do know that Spain is approx 50pct larger in area than the Uk with 50 pct less population, so my guess is that aire type facitlites are a good investment for local councils etc who are glad of any additional revenue these may bring, unfortunately in many part of the UK an increase in these types of facilities would probably only ecourage more people to travel into these areas with "larger" type vehicles and cause put even more strain on an inadequate infrastructure.

I’m not sure that aire type stopovers would necessarily entice those bigger RVs you talk of. Having been to Scandinavia I certainly didn’t experience that type of vehicle, nor so in the Picos de Europa. Even here in the Lakes they are rarely seen. We often advocate research before trips, so if the ‘official’ info. discouraged  the likes, pointing out the hazardous nature of doing so, then why not? It does work elsewhere.
