Diesel v Hybrid

I have been looking at changing my diesel 4WD VW towcar and have come to the conclusion that diesel is still the most economical and practical alternative, although I'm not sure about future resale value or the overall 'moral' side of things.

I'm specifically looking at a diesel AWD Ford Kuga as the plug-in is only 2WD and I don't want to lose this aspect.

The car would be used for towing on a 20/40% ratio roughly.

Am I right to still buy another (nearly new) diesel?

There is much discussion on this in various threads in the towcar section and I expect a moderator will move your thread there.

If the diesel version is the right car for you, I don't see how it can be other than right to buy it. Why would you buy something that doesn't totally suit your needs? Diesel cars will be around for a good few years yet.

+1, regardless of right or wrong if you need a certain vehicle for a certain job & it needs grunt you make your decision on those facts. There’s a way to go yet before we need to be concerned. Even then you can still use non EV’s but not buy them. Nicely put Tinny๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

We tow with a 2020 Outlander PHEV, because the majority of our journey are less than 30 miles, plus we can charge up at home using off peak or solar energy. Because of the above our running cost are ridiculously low averaging over a 100mpg, but it will not be the same for everyone.

PHEV running cost between 11.1- 13.2 pence per mile =£1000 for a EV charger

Hybrid Petrol 15.5 pence per mile.

Diesel 17.6 pence per mile.

Original we towed with a Ford Kuga diesel Powershift, the Kuga was a better tow car, but the Outlander is not far behind., some people delude themselves that a PHEV is better.

Given a choice without question I would tow with a diesel, but financial for us a compromise is the PHEV

As has been said above, this really is down to the OP. For some diesel is still the way to go but one I would only be happy to take if I knew my annual mileage and typical journeys would not give DPF issues.

Thanks again.

We are looking at a 2020 Kuga 2.0 190PS AWD (replacing my Passat Est bi-turbo 2.0 diesel AWD which has been terrific but getting a bit long in the tooth).

With my mix of driving and not doing several short journeys the DPF should not be a problem and overall the economy should be reasonable I hope.

Personally I’d stick with the Passat….. however I know sometimes one simply needs a change. Fords just dont float my boat, apart from a mk2 Escort company car in the late 70’s I have never had a Ford.
