Diesel v Hybrid

I have been looking at changing my diesel 4WD VW towcar and have come to the conclusion that diesel is still the most economical and practical alternative, although I'm not sure about future resale value or the overall 'moral' side of things.

I'm specifically looking at a diesel AWD Ford Kuga as the plug-in is only 2WD and I don't want to lose this aspect.

The car would be used for towing on a 20/40% ratio roughly.

Am I right to still buy another (nearly new) diesel?

When i purchased our XC90 B5D not once did i think or worry about buying another diesel, and only went mild hybrid because thats what was available that was suitable for our purpose within a minimum age vs max budget.

Solo runs 40+ mpg, Towing 1900kg twin axle 23-29mpg.
