Motorhome security

Hi,Sorry for your loss.

I would recommend a Tracker, last week I was shocked to find our 2016 mh stolen off our drive, which had a factory alarm & immobiliser fitted.

I reported it stolen to Tracker and I was pleased to say that the police located my vehicle in 1.5 hours. The number plates had been changed to diplomatic plates 15 miles away, but I collected it with little damage, without the tracker it would probably be abroad.

For now I have now boxed it in making it harder to move, but next week I am going to Van Bitz to have a decent alarm & non starter fitted for peace of mind.

Still unsure as to how it was stolen, as there was no damage to the locks or ignition, a copied key comes to mind but struggling to prove it at this stage.

A visual deterrent such as a steering wheel clamp is a useful addition to any existing measures.

Definitely have a chat with Van Bitz. I personally do not think trackers are worth the money but that is my opinion and clearly not that of others. Better to do all you can to prevent theft in the first place.

There are a number of singles Clubs, e.g. The Good Companions and of course Club rallies. There is also a discussion forum for singles on here towards the bottom of the main CT page.

although not specifically for single people, the C&CC Temporary Holiday Site program is great for casual touring, no booking, stay as long (or not) as you like, cheap as chips, very informal, huge choice, great locations close to town centres where a full site wouldn't be given permission.

no need to be a member of a 'centre' or other special group, just of the C&CC. diary in the back of each club magazine....

The Camping and Caravanning Club (CCC) magazine also gives details of weekend rallies throughout the UK. Some of these will probably be in the area you live.

The CAMC also has similar temporary holiday sites and weekend rallies but finding the information is not easy as they don't publish it in the club magazine.

You will often find details about vanning groups for single users in the site information rooms.

Your insurance company should advise you on the minimum security you need and may suggest more if you refer to their website or ask them.

We found a wheel clamp to be too heavy to carry about in the motorhome. We use a lighter device that fits to the steering wheel something like:

You should also consider passive safety such as where you park the motorhome and minimising having items on display to passing thieves. Quite a few single motorhomers have a dog for company and added security.

Your insurance company should advise you on the minimum security you need and may suggest more if you refer to their website or ask them. Also, your local Police Crime Prevention Officer should be able to advise on storing the motorhome at home - assuming the role hasn't been scrapped. There are security devices such as bollards, hedges, security lights and cameras. It depends on your location and where the drive is in relation to others.

A good rallying group is Motorhome Fun. Quite a few widowed people rally with them. Have a look at their web page and forum.
