Has anyone tried these ready meals?  I had a mail shot a few weeks ago and filed it mentally but didn't do anything about it because 2 meals were chilli which I don't eat  Repeat mail shot this week and I have gone for the promotion of ready meals - no refrigeration necessary(no chilli con carne this time!).  Seems a good camping idea.  3 mins in microwave or a bit longer in the oven if like me you don't micro.  I will report back but the ingredients look excellent.

Yes we used them a lot when mother in law was getting more and more house bound. And yes they have a long shelf life (we bought a month's meals in one go) and she liked them, they are easy to prepare and tasted good. They also do puddings as well. The only minor niggle was due to their delivery company (DHL I think) who sometimes didn't deliver on the day stated.

Yes Corners it was DHL brought them and in the past I have found them one of the most reliable.  Thanks for the reply and glad your MIL liked them.  I have looked at the well advertised frozen food you can buy but my freezer is always full especially the caravan one but home one too!

Depends where you are David I guess - my recent trip to the north of Scotland meant supermarkets were few and far between.  Plus I have been spending more time on site recently than I used to.   I wasn't thinking of entirely surviving on them but just having a couple of meals in hand.  There seem to be fewer additives in than a lot of ready meals but I will study the small print.  The introductory offer is inviting because of the £1.99 a meal!

Yes David it's the sheer convenience of being able to keep them in a cupboard for weeks that appealed to me.  But the proof will be in the eating of course.

Pippah

I have noticed in Waitrose (I am sure they are also available elsewhere) vacuum packed meals which are very easy to store. We have tried a few as emergency rations, some of them were OK others not so. Example here obviously you have to prepare/add your own rice etc, although in the case of rice there also a lot of quick microwavable products also available. Don't forget the old fashioned tinned things but they do add extra weight if that is an issue. If you try what you have mentioned it would be interesting to hear how you get on.

That looks useful - thank you.  Yes that Rice is very useful for me.  I don't particularly care for "eating out" on my own so I tend to eat in fairly extravagantly from time to time.  Generally I like to buy local too but I do believe in having emergency supplies.  Altnaharra is a lovely site but you don't want to run out of food there!

I will report back - I was thinking of trying one of each of the dishes and keeping the other for "rainy days".  Just in case anyone wonders - I don't have any financial interest in the brand I am trying out!

Surely, Pippah, you can always 'top up' your supplies when nipping out for a newspaper --  after all even at Altnahara it's only a fifty mile round trip to Lairg or Bettyhill wink

Hi Pippah, I tried some last year and found that the meals that do not require extras like rice are not very big. OK for a snack and as a standby but I wouldn't want to live on them!
