A Great Little Bolt Hole

We stayed here for three nights mid-October, and had a great stay. The Landlord was very friendly and so were all the staff in the pub. The food was also to a high standard and very good value for money - we had Sunday Roast, dessert, coffee, beer etc., and the bill came in at Toby Carvery prices, but it was way, way better. The site itself was perfect - all grass in good condition with level hardstandings for the outfits. The service point was well setup too. Nice rural location with a good view down the valley, although you could hear the road but not so that it was an issue. There was also a lovely footpath opposite the pub leading across the fields to Highworth, with other tracks leading off. Next time I'll have to get a map so we can go on a longer ramble. Regarding concerns by other reviewers about getting stuck in the mud, I can see that this might be a problem in bad weather depending on the pitch and tow car. One of the staff mentioned that it can sometimes happen, but that they have a friendly farmer available it there is a problem. Judging by the good condition of the grass, it does not look as if it happens that often. My advice would be look at your lawn at home, and it you would not want to be pitched on it because of the mud then maybe save the visit for another time. On the other hand, take a chance and enjoy - the tractor can always be called in if you get caught out. It's a great little bolt hole, so we'll certainly be back.
