Good site

We stayed here briefly in September. Easy to find and very well maintained site with great views on a little farm. The owners are lovely. The shower required £1 coins to operate for 15mins. I’m sure that info is relayed somewhere but I didn’t recall reading that and luckily we did have a couple of coins with us. So be aware of that if you plan on using it. We cycled to Wigtown one day ( you need to cross the busy A75 but actually it was easy) via Newton Stewart and then first left at the Cree Inn which puts you on a cycle path and then very minor roads all the way there. Wigtown is worth visiting and drop off to see the site of the Wigtown Martyrs and their graves. On the second day we cycled up to the Kirroughtree forest ( steep hill to get there- we have electric bikes so ok ) and did the easy cycle route once there and a lovely walk. Nice cafe there. We tend to leave the motorhome on site and use bikes/ walk and if we had more time there were other bike rides to do. We also walked into Newton Stewart . All your amenities there if required.

Fantastic Site

We are just back from a super two weeks in our caravan staying at the lovely Mains of Machermore C.L. Extremely warm welcome from the owners, Isabel and George, who were most helpful in every way possible throughout our stay. This lovely CL is an excellent base for touring Dumfries and Galloway, with its many places of interest, not to mention the sheer beauty of this wonderful part of Scotland. We thoroughly commend Mains of Machermore for your holiday in Southwest Scotland. We have so many places in the area still to see, (just didn’t have enough time in the fortnight we had), so we would most certainly return to this C.L. Tim and Jill Cramp.

Nostalgic return to Newton Stewart

A beautiful well maintained site with excellent facilities. Easy to find. Flat hard standing pitches. Immaculate WC and shower within in wet room and adjacent to an information area. Ideal for us as the EHU is metered and we don't need to use it. Very peaceful. Easy walk into Minnigaff and Newton Stewart. Lovely views in all directions. Very peaceful and quiet. Very good value. Friendly and helpful owners. Would highly recommend this site and book well in advance as it is clearly very popular.

Excellent site

Lovely and peaceful site. Stayed two nights. A friendly and helpful welcome from Isobel. It's a working farm and loads of animals around. The scenery is beautiful. The facilities are clean and well maintained. I highly recommend it.

Great wee site

A last minute overnight stay because we needed power and showers. Lovely wee site. Fields next door had calves and lambs, so lots to see. Very clean shower room - nice to see a sensible shower area with room for drying and handrails. Both owners popped over at different times, and were friendly and helpful. EHU is metered so you only pay for what you use (wish more places did this). Would definitely recommend this site

Winter warmer

We stayed a couple of nights mid November and it proved perfect for our week long break in Dumfries and Galloway. Isobel, the owner, braved a windy and dark evening to welcome us. We’d managed to set up earlier in the afternoon and were very glad of the hot shower provided in the ‘Wee Hoose’, the facility can only be described as home from home. Exceptionally clean and well serviced. Firm and level hard standing means I wouldn’t hesitate to stay anytime of the year. The post code takes you straight to the site too. As others have stated the site is located just outside the Galloway forest park and only a couple of miles from Newton Stewart were there is a Sainsburys and Aldi next to each other in the centre of town. A large free public car park adjacent is easy to manoeuvre in a motorhome.

Easy access to National Cycle Route 7

We booked 3 nights at this CL which was a great base for us to get out on our bikes. The small town of Newton Stewart has, amongst other shops, a reasonably well stocked Aldi and a Sainsbury's next door - so these were our first port of call before arriving at the CL.Once we arrived we checked out the toilet block - extremely clean - but there is a small charge for using the shower and also a charge for using the Wifi - so we opted to use our own facilities as well as the data on our phones. There is excellent mobile phone reception. Not having a tv in our motorhome we can't comment on the reception. Access to NCR7 is just across the main road - so day one we cycled anti-clockwise to Gatehouse of Fleet and then onwards to the Red Kit Feeding Centre (again). Yet again the birds refused to come in to feed - so we left at 3. We then headed up to New Galloway and cycled back to the CL through the Galloway Forest - which was lovely. The final part of the 7 was on a main road and the road was pretty busy due to a cross-country motorsports event going on. Day 2 we cycled the NCR7 clockwise up through Newton Stewart and the RSPB Wood of Cree before veering off towards Glenvernoch and then looping back on ourselves through the Penningham Forest. The CL was fully booked all the time we were there which was good to see. We were quite surprised as to the vicinity of the CL - we were envisaging it to be literally on the outskirts of the Galloway Forest and not as close to the A76 as it was, but considering how close it was to the major road, the CL was extremely quiet at night. The pitch was fully serviced which was great as it meant easy draining of our grey waste - always a plus factor for us.

A lovely spot tucked away yet easy to reach

I stopped here for just one night on way to Stena ferry but would be happy to come again. Very simple but clean and very adequate for the 5 pitches onsite. Lovely rural views.

Mains of Machermore first visit

Having read various reviews of this site we took the chance they were accurate and booked 14 nights for our first visit. So pleased we did, so peaceful yet close to main road. Handy to reach so many visitor areas either by car or cycle. Supermarkets and eateries I close proximity. Isabel was so welcoming and the site and facilities very clean. We now are trying to work out when we can revisit.
