Laid back approach

This is our third time here for one or two nights each time. This is our go to site in the lakes. Down to earth farmers run the site. It is rough and ready, but that is part of the charm. Yes, there were 7 units on site this time, but we were thankful to be accommodated. There was no overcrowding. We have been on other sites with 5 units which were much more crowded. Stunning views all round and easy access to Keswick and south to Grasmere etc

Beautiful views and friendly welcome

We just spent 9 nights here and loved every minute. The views are beautiful, the stream running alongside is the only noise and it's fairly easy to get to Keswick and also Grasmere & Ambleside. Walks from the site or a short drive, and the fells all around you. Bus stop at the end of the drive. The site is grassy but hardstanding pitches which was helpful in the wet and the owners were really welcoming and friendly throughout our stay. Definitely one to return to.

A lovely, relaxing stay

We have just returned from a lovely week's stay at this certified location. Very peaceful place with lovely, friendly owners and amazing views of the surrounding hills. Easy to reach off a main road. Babbling stream running behind the site. Despite the rain, the pitch drained really well. We fed the visiting red squirrel each morning with monkey nuts. Turn right out of the site to get to Thirlmere which is a lovely walk/ride around. Turn left out of the site to walk into Keswick. Regular bus service in both directions. We had a very relaxing stay and we will be returning again next year.

Disappointingly overcrowded

Newbies! We've just started motorhoming. This was our 8th site. We arrived at the allotted time only to have a 1hr wait whilst "our" pitch was vacated. So, No ease of arrival/welcome was definitely not good. 5 van site? Does 8 equal 5 ... then No. I have photos of the site with 8 vans on it plus occupants. One of these was sited in the barn/farm vehicle shed. We'd booked 5 days but left after 3 as the situation got no better. It was pretty cold when we were there. The 16amps may well be "spread" across the pitches as we could not cook & heat the van at the same time without overloading the supply so we used our gas. Yes .. brand new motorhome so we do know how many amps were pulling. That being said the farming family really are nice, albeit a tad naive pehaps. Access to lots of walks & bike rides is excellent right from the site & we so love this area. We've walked in this area for some 20 years before motorhoming ... this is not the first time we've seen the site with more than 5 vans on it. So, if you want that overcrowded, hemmed in feeling like a club site then this is the place for you. Such a pity.

Cracking site

Very easy to find. Spacious with lovely views, peaceful and quiet. Loved the sound of the stream with waterfall running beside site. About 3 miles from Keswick with shops & pleasant gardens. Unfortunately the walking paths from the site are still closed & will be until October, at the earliest!

Closed paths

As has been said before the site isn't where the Caravan Club map shows which makes a difference at the moment. United Utilities is putting in a new pipeline along the main road which has blocked off the footpaths from the site. There is a way to get to Naddle but it entails walking aling the road. If you want to walk the other way, to Thirlmere, thats blocked as well with no access to Thirlmere. The Naddle side should be open by Easter but as United Utilities is worse than useless with its information I've no idea about Thirlmere. Such a shame as it spoiled the visit. Also, if it's cold the tap freezes so you have to traipse up to the farmhouse for water. Why do sites open in winter but don't put a tap somewhere frost-proof. There are three barns, some with water, but no inside tap. My overall rating of the site hasn't been affected by the paths issues as these are temporary.

Excellent site

We have just returned from a memorable week here. The site is quiet and plenty of space between the vans. The scenery is beautiful and there are plenty of peaceful walks from or near the site. We found the regular bus service from the end of the lane excellent. One way takes you into Keswick and terminates by a Booths supermarket, the other way gives access to Grasmere, Ambleside and even as far as Kendal and Lancaster. Saves a fortune on parking fees and much more relaxing than trying to find parking space!

Don't set your satnav to the postcode for Shoulthwaite farm

Every good said about this CL is fully endorsed .. but do follow the instructions in the site details .. the postcode takes you to a point 0.75 miles north, in the hills, on roads that are barely single track ..

Raw beauty

Ditto to previous reviews. Lovely location, listening to the roaring brook and baaing lambs. Our dogs loved the walk straight out the van onto the footpath through the woods to the fell. Appreciated the hard standing, so can visit whatever the weather. Definitely be returning.

Stunningly beautiful CL

Beautiful CL surrounded by fells and forest. All pitches have basic shale hardstandings and access from the main road is easy and far enough away for noise not to be a problem. The site is on a working sheep farm with a beck running behind a perimeter wall on one side and farm outbuildings flank the top end where there is a public footpath through the forest and up into the fells. The owners are lovely people who still work hard on the farm despite being in their mid eighties. The views from the site are stunning and the site is well situated for Keswick, Grasmere and Ambleside and central, northern and eastern fells and lakes. A real plus for us was the birds directly outside the caravan window on the bird feeders. Chaffinches, blue tits, great tits, coal tits, nuthatch, siskins, tree creeper, greater spotted woodpecker and a daily visits from a red squirrel to inspect his board of nuts. We like this sort of CL, it ticks all the boxes for us, no frills yet stunning. We have been visiting the lakes for over 40 years, but having now forsaken canvas for a touring caravan (due to advancing years) this was our first visit in our van and it certainly will not be our last to Shou!thwaite. Our thanks to the Harrison family for making us so welcome and taking the time to chat to us, despite having to work very hard with early lambing in very difficult weather conditions. The Shoulthwaite weather forecasting string was absolutely soaking at times!!!! For those who have not seen this tongue in cheek cumbrian farmer's sense of humour look on the barn door.
