Quiet and simple

Great location but no views. Access to walks and coast. Great pub and shop. Everything we needed but no views unless you stand in the doorway. Phone and tv signal fair. Getting around this area became an issue with endless narrow roads and high hedges, quite stressful at times but that’s Devon for you. It’s not an area we would return to - avoid using Satnav and trust in your maps and instructions from the owner. Sandy Lane needs to be removed from satnav vocabulary. We never met the owners.

Lovely CL

Really enjoyed 5 nights here, so peaceful. Very friendly helpful owners. Great for coastal walks and visiting the surrounding area. Pigsnose a super little pub. The roads are a quite hair raising especially when towing a van, not many passing places, hence a very early departure to miss traffic.

Perfect CL in Outstanding location

We've recently returned from a week's stay at this CL. I cannot recommend it enough, although this may be to our detriment as it could make it so popular finding a space could become difficult. However, I feel that Jane and Richard, who are the most considerate of Cl owners, deserve a first class review. Their main concern being the comfort of their campers. I noted the review concerning the toilet disposal and would say that this has now been addressed. As far as any noise was concerned there certainly wasn't any rowdy parties in the farmer's field next door and so can only conclude as Jane advised that this was a one off instance and to be fair would have been out of her control. East Prawle is an area of outstanding beauty and we intend visiting early next year when hopefully Jane and Richard will have a space for us.

Peaceful and pleasant

A pleasant site, once you've negotiated the Devon lanes. Very flat for motor homes and lots of space. Very handily placed for the village and walks. Shame about the loo disposal. Be prepared to be splashed! Friendly village with pub and shop.

No longer a secret

I have been going to The Retreat with my grandchildren for 9 years. The owners Jane & Richard are lovely people and seem to enjoy having the kids. The kids enjoy the cliff walks and the various beaches and coves where we have caught fish and prawns. If we hadn't booked a pitch when the season started Jane phoned to ask if she should reserve us a pitch. I have been selfish in not recommending The Retreat earlier, not wanting to make it so busy that I could not get a space. However I have now had both knees replaced and cannot manage the cliff walks and the grand children have reached an age when they do not want to come on holiday with us oldies. I have found on the rare occasion that there has been noise from the neighbouring campsite but the night sky and shooting stars in August far out way the odd noisy party next door. I would advise following the directions in the hand book and to arrive and leave early or late.

Nightmare CL

If you do decide to use this CL do follow the instructions given to get there and hope you don't meet anything of any size coming the other way as I did, whether it's getting to the site or going out and about you will spend most of your time either praying you don't meet anything coming the other way or in the hedge (not great when you've got a new car). The site itself is well kept and the owners seem friendly, the waste disposal could be messy if your not careful. There is camping field is located behind the site which is not mentioned in the description.   We stayed at the site for 4 nights, the first 2 days/nights were great, however the next 2 days/nights were a nightmare, a load of campers setup in the camping field with a marquee. There was shouting and screaming all day by adults and children and then in the evening very load music until the early hours. Obviously the CL owners are not to blame for this but if this is a regular event then it would have been nice to have been told when we booked so we could have made our own choice.

Comment from Community Manager:

Many thanks for leaving a review. The CL owner has been in touch as she wants to ensure that everyone staying at The Retreat has the best possible time with them and as such would like to address your concerns. The camping field in the nearby vicinity belongs to a farmer from the village and as such this is why it is not mentioned in the description as it is not part of the CL. As you can see from previous reviews the site is normally very peaceful and quiet so we are sorry that you felt this wasn’t the case during part of your stay. The CL owner was not aware of the issue with noise as they had no complaints from anyone staying on the CL at the same time as you and would like to assure you this is not a regular occurrence and they have never had complaints about this before. Like many CL Sites, The Retreat is located in the countryside and as such there are some narrow lanes. As stated in the site’s directions please always follow the directions given for the final approach as Satnavs may take you along roads unsuitable for towing. I hope this helps reassure you and thank you again for leaving a review.

Take note of directions stated in the details, a must! A little daunting drive into this site but worth it when your there, site owner is a lovely bloke and very welcoming. Plenty of space to choose from and around each pitch. Chemical waste mite be messy (watch out for splash back) as it presents as a hole in the ground covered by a flat piece of material. The local boozer the Pigs nose inn was great, family and dog friendly. The walk down to the coast path and water make your heart work but again once your there rock pooling etc is a reward. We will definitely try and return at some point in the future.

Peace and quiet

This is a grand site in a lovely village in a wonderful area. The site is well kept, on the edge of the village, which has a good old village pub, shop and green. Access to the coast path, and some fine sandy beaches, is easy. Salcombe can be reached by ferry. The walking is great. Our second time, and we will return.
