Peace and Tranquility, helped by the wardens

Our second visit of the year Exmoor House site, and it remains one of the best, particularly if you like, peace, quiet and the delights of a fantastic Exmoor location. Much has been said about the site in previous reviews, pointing out things such as how spotless the facilities are, how well kept the site is, how convenient nearby Dulverton is and the closest shops etc.

This is all true of course, but there’s one thing that doesn’t get much of a mention and that’s the peace and tranquility. Noise is limited to the babbling of the adjacent River Barle, and a distant peal of bells at Dulverton All Saints Church. All very rural, peaceful and relaxing.

The wardens play a very important part in maintaining the idyll. Instead of the noisy, petrol driven mini tractors that some site’s custodians seem fond of driving around to collect rubbish or just for transport, Exmoor house wardens make do with...... shanks’s pony and a wheelbarrow. Ok, it’s only a small site, so the silent “man- powered” rubbish collection works well and probably wouldn’t work very well at larger locations, but at Exmoor house it’s entirely appropriate, and there’s no rush, which harks back to an earlier, more peaceful, gentler age.

As well as being virtually silent doing it “by hand” is also entirely ecological and dare I say, keeps wardens fit (and young!) (I should say it’s almost silent... the wardens are very friendly so do actually stop and talk sometimes!)

Exmoor house is a now a firm favourite. I’ll leave it to you to work out why. Sshhhh... don’t tell everyone.
