First Visit to Southport Site

We have recently stayed at Southport site on a service pitch. We arrived after 7pm and was met by a warden. He told us the only service pitch available was 102 and handed me the facilities and barrier key. Had to open the barrier myself which meant getting out of the car as the barrier post is not very convenient when you have a twin axle caravan hitched up. You then have to be quick before it starts to come down. We found the pitch and set up. The site was pretty full but was quiet and peaceful. We are elderly so getting the awning threaded through the channel is hard. We were helped by the warden - very pleasant and we were thankful. After pumping the air channels came the time to peg out. The hardcore on the pitches is difficult to penetrate and we found it impossible. Robert on pitch 103 loaned his electric drill but that too was almost defeated and a number of metal screw pegs were damaged. He said he had that pitch last year and he too had extreme difficulty pegging out. Can it be investigated? The sand dunes are lovely and each day with my dog we explored them and also the beach beyond the Coastal Road. The sea however is very elusive and the long pier does not get its uprights visited by the surf - did it ever? The Edwardian town is nicely presented and I feel a lot of effort is spent making it decorative and welcoming Would we visit again? Yes - but there needs to be more service pitches and there needs to be consideration with the choice of hardcore. A mallet should suffice to put the pegs in and that is not the case at present. So be warned - take your electric drill!

I was the member on the next pitch referred to by Shorpshire1988 and can back up what they are saying about the trouble with pegging out on pitch 102. I was on that same pitch last year and ended up with, I think it was, 15 pegs bent beyond use. The pegs, all metal, were a variety of daiametres and styles, it was just a very difficult pitch to get pegs into. I did mention this to site staff at the time when I purchased some more steel pegs from reception.

Have to say pitch 103 was a little better, only bent 5 pegs out of shape this year.

Glad to hear that Shropshire 1988 seems to have got home safely, hope our paths cross again.
