Lovely site - shame about the road noise and clay pigeon shooting

We booked this site for 12 days but knew on arrival we couldn't possibly put up with the constant road noise 24/7 although we did stay for 6 days after which we moved on to a very peaceful CL with sea views for the rest of our stay....Bliss! There is nothing in the club write up to suggest there is a problem with road noise although it is mentioned in a couple of reviews. We pitched as far away as we could at the far end of the site but still experienced noise from both the A38 and the A382. Not sure where the people who describe this site as peaceful and tranquil were situated. If peace and quiet is high on your agenda, this site is NOT for you. Shame really because it is a lovely site and the wardens are very helpful, it just needs to be somewhere else. As already mentioned in another review there is also the clay pigeon shooting which unnerved our dogs. Stover Country Park is very nice but if you have dogs beware, they are not allowed off lead around the lake and water courses which doesn't leave a lot where they can safely be let off lead. Our dogs found an open farm gate in the country park that had been left wide open onto a road! 10 out of 10 for the campsite and wardens.

In my experience, and I’ve stayed at Stover many times, there is some traffic noise from the A382 at busy times if you pitch near the gate. It’s much quieter at the bottom of the site and I very much doubt you’d hear traffic on the A38 as, not only is it further away but it's muffled by the woodland of the country park. It was bad luck that you encountered the bird scaring crop protector, or whatever caused the bangs, as it’s not a permanent feature.

I thought the only restraints on dogs were that they should be under control on the aerial walkway (why would anyone do otherwise?😦) and not allowed in the picnic areas. The lake and ponds in the park are home to a lot of waterfowl so it's naturally not sensible to have dogs off leads in the vicinity.

In reply to your comments re traffice noise etc: We WERE at the bottom end of the site and could clearly hear traffic noise both from the A38 and the A382 and this was 24/7 and not just at busy times.  We didn't get a full night's sleep the whole time we we there due to the road noise which was constant.  Re: the Clay Pigeon Shooting on 2 days a week: this was not a crop scarer but loud bangs which went on for several hours during the days that this takes place and another member told us this is a regular occurrence on Stover.  Regarding your comments about dogs in Stover Country Park.  There are signs everywhere telling owners to keep their dogs on leads around the lake and water courses.  Of course there will always be people who don't adhere to these signs!  As already mentioned, the actual campsite was very nice and the wardens helpful.  To put it in a nutshell, its horses for courses.

I guess you must be very light sleepers.

I got the impression you were originally saying there was inadequate off lead space for dogs in the CP. 🤔

Yep, it’s very much my course even though I’m not a horse😁

I've read on Trip Advisor that a local school holds CP shoots nearby but not in the country park.
