Spectacular moorland

We've just come back from a 10 night stay here, the very friendly wardens keep this site absolutely immaculate. No shower block, so these sites tend to be quieter than the ones with, which we prefer. Don't be fooled by the name, there isn't an Abbey, the name has come from the fact that there was a Priory, a very small remain of which you can find in the village, which has amenities, and a couple of pubs, we ate at the Coach House which is adjacent to the site entrance, we found it quiet, but I should imagine with another caravan site in the area it would get very busy. Food was excellent. The site is a long layout with vans either side, there is a road along one side and a river on the other, there is an element of noise so I only rated four for quiet. Lots to do in the area, every road from the village takes you across the moors, and the heather was just about to come out in flower, this was mid June, so July August the moors will be a their best with heather in full flower. We visited Scarborough, The castle is on the headland, one side is the usual Victorian seaside, the other is a sweeping promenade, with hundreds of parking spacing, so something for everyone. We rode the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Pickering to Whitby (get a £5 discount voucher from the wardens), worth a visit if you like a bit of Victorian seaside with a bit of fishing element, the Abbey is spectacular, we love the steam trains. Robin Hood bay tickled our interest, it has nothing to do with Robin Hood, it was named that to encourage tourism, it works, nice place and worth a visit. The highlight of our visit was the Bird of Prey centre in Helmsley, they have three flying expeditions whereby they fly several birds, and there are many other species to view, amazing. Helmsley is a very pretty village with a castle, so well worth a visit. This is walkers paradise, so don't forget you boots and poles. Just pray for sun.
