Fantastic Weekend

Just returned from a lovely sunny weekend at a well maintained site. The wardens are very friendly and do a great job keeping the site tidy and pretty with hanging baskets and well mown grass etc. There is a choice of hardstanding, grass, sunny open pitches and woody glades. Plenty of great walks straight from the site in the adjacent woods and plenty of places of interest a short car journey away. Will definiteley return

Good back to nature site

Very enjoyable stay here for two nights recently. Grounds well maintained and offers a nice variety of grass or hard standing spots. Sarah and Keith made us most welcome. Was very pleased I could bring my two dogs who had many enjoyable walks. Met some nice people from far and near. Site is much improved since I stayed there years ago, yet still has the close to nature appeal. The Desert Rats memorial is at the site turnoff; well worth seeing. Mundford is only two miles and both Watton and Swaffham are less than ten miles away. Swaffham has much to offer to meet your needs and has a thriving Saturday market. Although it rained much of the second day I enjoyed a very refreshing stay and will return again soon.

Wonderful weekend

We have just returned from a lovely weekend at this site. It is so quiet and peaceful, except for the occasional barking of dogs, but to be honest if you come to a site like this what do you expect.  I have given it a 5 for families but there are no playground facilities so not as good for less active families. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed it and will return soon.

Ahhh Peace.........

We stopped off for a couple of days, 8/10th June, the site is very clean, the wardens were very helpful and chatty, clean and well kept water/elsan and dirty water points. Great for walks, peace and quiet, lovely dog walks (not all the mess being picked up tho - shame), only downside I missed the nightjars flying round in the forest! Next to the Desert Rats memorial, nice walk round and plenty of info. The wardens have a lovely hut with loads of info on places in the area to visit, walks etc etc.

Great for nature lovers

This is a great site for nature lovers as it is set in the forest it's self, I was lucky enough to see my first nightjar in an area less than a couple of hundred metres from the van, great. There is a flooded gravel pit nature reserve and arboretum at Lynford Hall just down the road that can be walked to from the site through the woods, which even has a small beach for the kids. The gunfire from the firing range on the other side of the main road is a bit off putting but not a problem. If you like to feed the birds make sure you take a feeder that is squirrel proof or you will be asked to stop, they do not want to attract them to the site as they have caused problems in the past.

rain & sun

Been here any times as its not far from home so is really good for a short break. Great site and wardens, well kept and lovely when the hanging baskets are on display. Good for walking and car journeys to local area, Thetford, Brandon etc. One thing let our short break down, the loud 'know it all' caravanner 3 pitches away!  All we could hear was his voice! he didnt shut up all day!! Not pleasant. Thankfully this wont stop us coming again as we love this sitei

Peace and quiet, great for nature lovers but remote.

It is natural enough to expect that the Thetford Forest site would be set among trees and lovers of timberlands will not be disappointed. For those arboreally challenged, like myself, a night or two is no great issue, especially as the main raft of pitches – set in an arc around a number of quiet glades each with a collection of grass pitches – is relatively open and lets in a good deal of light and sun. There were lovely walks around, and within, the forest and I imagine that wild life lovers will find a few days here to be very absorbing. I am sure children will love it too although after a couple of days they might run out of things to do. There is an interesting walk with good information boards about the Desert Rats who trained here for five months prior to D-Day. I learned from this. There are no facilities but that’s a known standard and if that’s an issue to anyone they don’t come here. But it is also remote, and, in my view, that makes it primarily a stopover site or a weekend site; well for those of us in motorhomes anyway who prefer not to move once pitched. Aside from exploring the forests and spotting the birds and other wildlife or plant life there really isn’t anything much to do. There’s no public transport, and no pub, restaurant, shop or place of interest within safe walking distance. Even cyclists have few options unless they are up for energetic excursions of greater distance than I can manage these days. I cycled to Watton, a round trip of 15 miles which is about my limit – especially in the face of the unforgiving east Anglian wind. Watton seemed to be a pleasant little town with some interesting shops. For myself two nights was quite enough and I prefer to be in places where I can do more or, alternatively, easily get out and about using buses or trains. For those with cars this is plainly no issue and so I have written this not as a criticism (I research sites fully and I knew what to expect) but to inform those who see this as pertinent, whether positively or, like me, negatively. For some only wanting to relax and unwind with a good book, you might find this place to be perfection. The relief wardens were on duty when I came and they were lovely. My hard standing pitch was in excellent, fresh condition. I am not sure how old it was but compared to some very tired hard standings I have endured it was perfect. Wifi was slow, but I’ve learned to expect that, the Vodafone signal was good, TV reception was patchy. The bollards had TV points but I could not get these to work. I saw no indication anywhere that they didn’t work but I saw no one else with an aerial lead. Personally I’d only want to come here again as a stopover, and I would probably choose Mildenhall first for that purpose (despite its gloom as there you’re very much IN the forest) because at least the town is within easy reach; but I am glad I came here for a couple of nights to enjoy the walks, the forest, the birds and the information about the Desert Rats.

Bank holiday weekend

A beautiful site, incredibly peaceful even over bank holiday weekend with quite a few kids about (including our three). What a great place to just chill and wander in the surrounding woods etc. The lack of a toilet/shower block is not a major issue, but did significantly reduce our getting ready times since the caravan couldn't produce 5 showers of hot water. The site is very tidy and attractive, we were on a grass pitch since on arrival there were only 5 pitches left but it was very pleasant, the wardens were very friendly and helpful too.

Back to Nature

This site is in a forest setting  as the name implies with many tall pine trees. Non-members are accepted but not tents. On this site you have to have your own facilities as the site does not have a toilet block. There are 83 pitches in total, 37 of them being on hardstandings the rest on glass. The hardstandings are in an arc from reception along one side of the site. Some of the grass pitches are in natural glades amongst the trees. Electric points, rated at 16 amps and using CEE17 blue connectors, are conveniently placed to pitches. Fresh and waste water points, as well as chemical disposal are placed at regular intervals around the site. The motorhome service point requires you to reverse in with emptying drains on both sides, however they still require heavy drain covers to be removed to access the drain points. The site also has a storage facility. There appear to be some seasonal pitches on this site. According to the handbook TV reception is poor although we were able to use our satellite dish but this will require choosing your pitch carefully to allow a clear view of the sky. There is site wide WiFi which works reasonably well given the remoteness of the site, time can be purchased online. At the front of the site there is an information hut and at reception some essentials can be purchased. There are no specific play area for children although with immediate access to the forest areas older ones will no doubt enjoy that. You may even be lucky enough to see deer on the site. This site is quite remote from habitation so without your own transport the only other options are walking and cycling, there is no public transport within easy reach. The site is very restful if you want some R&R or perhaps would be a good stopping off point when going to the coast. If you can make use of the mid-week discount sites fees are very reasonable, in fact cheaper than many CL’s. There are many options for walks from the site. For the less active the Desert Rats Memorial and circuit of the old training ground might be ideal. For shopping Swaffham is probably the best bet with both Waitrose and Tesco supermarkets. The site is within the area known as Breckland.
