Guines, La Bien Assise

This story happened on: 09/06/2012

Hi Just returned from a week at Guines, La Bien Assise, a site I have visited many times in the past, however I had not been there for 8 years and was caught out with the new roundabout & entrance.  For those who have not been for a few years they have built a roundabout and put the entrance on the roundabout, I actually sailed on through heading for the old entrance only to find it is closed up.  I had to then drive out the road where I did locate a lay bye that enabled me to turn around.  It’ still a good site and in fact I feel the grounds have matured well since my visits many years ago.  The washrooms could do with an upgrade but they are clean and things work.  I can’t fault the pitches which are huge.  I do however feel that the actual town has gone downhill and could do with some investment and a makeover we used to walk around it at night but this time it just did not feel right.  We viewed other towns in the area and found them much more pleasing to the eye with decent foot paths and flowered areas but Guines seems to have been let go a bit.  I did like the fact that there is a new Carrefour just outside the town which is very useful especially given the fact that it also sells fuel.

You've answered your question there, a large supermarket outside town, local businesses lose trade shops close down centre turns to ghost town, Council loses income, pride gets lost. resuling in a run down town that looks a bit seedy & then cap that with the worst recession since the 1930's

Hi

We went to this stie for the first time last year and loved it. The site itself was very good and we especially enjoyed the pool and the bar. It seems to be a popular site with British caravanners infact we bumped into a family who we know from our town which was quite strange. You are right about the town we took a walk in one day but apart from a couple of cafes there isn't much else but we would definelty return to the site again.

We stopped  last year overnight at this site on way back to the Tunnel and was quite impressed with it. It was busy for the time of year, and its handy for overnight stopovers going or coming  as its only 8 mls to ferry/ tunnel  and its an ACSI site. People were very welcoming.  Cafe & Bar were only and the 'chippie' was doing great trade.
